Tom Hanks’ WW2 Epic Has Just Crossed A Staggering Streaming Milestone

I’m still blown away by how well Greyhound is doing on streaming! It’s a fantastic World War II movie starring Tom Hanks, who plays Captain Krause – a Navy commander who’s thrown into a really tough situation. He’s leading an Allied convoy through dangerous waters full of German U-boats, and he doesn’t have a ton of experience, which makes things even more intense. It’s directed by Aaron Schneider, and honestly, it’s a gripping watch.

When Greyhound debuted on Apple TV+ in June 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, it quickly attracted a lot of viewers. Now, data from FlixPatrol shows just how popular it’s been – the World War II film has been among the top 10 most-watched movies on the streaming service in the US for a remarkable 601 days.

Although it’s a strong performer, Greyhound hasn’t quite surpassed The Family Plan (2023) in terms of longevity on Apple TV+. The Mark Wahlberg film held a spot in the top 10 for an impressive 622 days. Nevertheless, Greyhound has clearly resonated with audiences.

It’s important to remember that Apple TV+’s list of the most popular shows and movies doesn’t change as often as those on Netflix, Prime Video, or HBO Max. This is because Apple produces fewer shows and movies, and unlike other streaming services, it mainly features only Apple-made content. So, the shows and movies you typically see in Apple TV+’s top 10 are almost always originals.

Despite many shows coming and going, Greyhound remained on Apple TV+’s top ten list for an impressive 601 days. This strong performance for the war film is a good sign for the upcoming sequel.

A sequel to Greyhound, titled Greyhound 2, was officially announced in spring 2022. According to Deadline, filming is planned to begin in Sydney, Australia, in January 2026. Tom Hanks, who also wrote the screenplay for the first film (released in 2020), will reprise his role and return as director. The new movie will likely continue the story of Hanks’ character, Captain Krause, and his efforts to help the Allies win during the D-Day landings and the Pacific Theater of World War II.

I’m hearing good news for fans of Greyhound! It sounds like Tom Hanks won’t be alone – several of the original cast, including Stephen Graham and Elisabeth Shue, are set to reprise their roles. And speaking of Graham, he’s really become a streaming powerhouse since Greyhound. His performance in the Netflix hit Adolescence has earned him a ton of recognition and a huge fanbase.

Critics and audiences generally liked the movie Greyhound, but there’s potential for a sequel to be even better. It currently has a 78% rating from critics and a 76% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

It’s unclear if a sequel to Greyhound will be released in movie theaters. The first film was originally planned for theaters, but it ended up streaming due to COVID-19. Now that the original film has achieved a milestone, a theatrical release for the sequel is definitely a possibility.
