Hideki Kamiya is a celebrated game developer known for his work at both Capcom and PlatinumGames. He’s created many popular titles, including Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, Okami, the first Bayonetta game, and The Wonderful 101. Currently, he runs a studio called Clovers and is developing the highly anticipated sequel to Okami.
The director of Resident Evil 2 is known for being open about what he likes and dislikes. He recently shared that he’s often looked to a particular classic game for inspiration over the years. He considers it a masterclass in game design, and while it might be surprising, it’s clear how it’s shaped some of his most popular creations.
Resident Evil 2’s Director Was Inspired By a Beloved Zelda Game
Hideki Kamiya, a lifelong gaming enthusiast since the 1980s, credits one game in particular as his biggest inspiration: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, released in 1991. He recently shared with Famitsu the games that sparked his desire to become a game developer, and this title stood out as the most influential.
During the same interview, Kamiya also mentioned classic 2D games like Castlevania, Gradius, and Space Harrier as sources of inspiration. While not as widely celebrated as the 16-bit Zelda game, these titles are still fantastic and have significantly influenced the gaming world.
Several people have noted similarities between at least one of Kamiya’s games and the Zelda series. Okami, a 2006 action-adventure game rooted in Japanese folklore, features gameplay that feels very similar to a Zelda title. Despite being a 3D game, Okami still incorporates elements reminiscent of classic 2D Zelda games.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Changed the Franchise Forever
Kamiya didn’t say exactly what he loves about The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, but the reasons are pretty clear. The first two Legend of Zelda games on the NES set the standard for the series, though they were often very challenging, particularly the second game, which could be hard for new players to get into.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is widely considered the first truly enduring game in the series, remaining enjoyable today just as it was when it originally came out in the nineties. Beyond its wealth of content, this Super Nintendo title improved the combat, making it challenging but fair.
Looking at the games Hideki Kamiya has created, it’s clear he’s been heavily influenced by The Legend of Zelda, and this isn’t limited to just Okami. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, released in 1991, continues to inspire game developers today, particularly those who played it when it first came out and went on to create their own iconic games.
