Highly Anticipated DCU Superhero Series Gets “Enormous” Tease Ahead of HBO Premiere

DC’s next big project, coming to HBO next year, is a Green Lantern series. After the success of Superman and Peacemaker this year, DC Studios is hoping to keep the excitement going. While a Green Lantern movie didn’t succeed in 2011, early looks at the new series are very promising, and it appears the show will embrace the more fantastical elements of the source material rather than being overly realistic.

Aaron Pierre, who stars in the upcoming HBO series Lanterns, recently told Esquire that the show is impressively large in scope. Filming has just wrapped on the series, where Pierre plays the iconic Green Lantern, John Stewart, opposite Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. Though Lanterns is being billed as a gritty, Earth-based mystery thriller, it sounds like the first season will be grand and epic, just as fans are hoping.

We just finished filming Lanterns, which was a huge production in every way. I feel incredibly lucky to have worked with such a talented and grateful team – amazing directors, crew, and cast who all strive to do their best work. We’re all really proud of what we’ve accomplished, and we’re excited for fans who have been waiting a long time to see it. We truly hope everyone loves it as much as we do!

Pierre also shared that the upcoming show won’t ignore the Green Lanterns’ imperfections as people. While the characters in the HBO series are members of an intergalactic police force, the show will still aim to make them feel very relatable to viewers.

What I really appreciate about the Lantern Corps is that while they’re definitely heroes – celebrated and admired as such – they aren’t afraid to show their imperfections. That’s what makes them so easy to connect with. We talked about this a lot while filming. Now that I know how this season turned out, I think even as a viewer, I’d feel like I truly understand those characters and could see them as real people I know.
