Be careful! The following contains spoilers for the newest episode of High Potential. If you haven’t seen it yet on ABC or with a Hulu subscription, you might want to stop reading.
I’ve always been a big fan of Kaitlin Olson, especially her work on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. So, I’m really enjoying watching her in her new role as Morgan Guillory in High Potential. It’s been fun to see her blend these two roles – she’s kept the same trailer on set and even included little nods to It’s Always Sunny in her character’s appearance, and she’s appeared as Morgan on the It’s Always Sunny set. But the most recent episode was the best crossover yet!
Look, I can’t definitively say that the latest High Potential episode, “Chasing Ghosts,” directly referenced It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Sweet Dee Reynolds, but honestly, believing it was just a random occurrence would be pretty hard to swallow. It just felt too connected to be a coincidence.
How High Potential Seemingly Referenced It’s Always Sunny
Towards the end of the episode, Morgan and Karadec manage to catch the complicated killer—likely bending the rules to do so. Morgan then notices something missing from the room—an animal that was there before—which sparks this conversation:
- MORGAN: Karadec, where’s the bird?
- KARADEC: Bird?
- MORGAN: Yeah, that giant, awesome, black raven that was perched on the clock, casting a super creepy shadow when we got here. Do you remember?
- KARADEC: I guess I was just focused on that body. I don’t know what to tell you.
Let’s not forget the time Karadec playfully called Morgan a bird! He technically asked if she was a bird, but it’s still a memorable scene for fans of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Earlier in the episode, I assumed the raven on the clock was just a prop when Olson’s character noticed it. I even jokingly thought it symbolized Morgan seeing a reflection of himself, but I didn’t expect the show to actually revisit that idea. And yet, it did!
If you’re a fan of High Potential and are confused, this joke has a long history! Kaitlin Olson’s character, Sweet Dee, accidentally reminded people of a bird – specifically a large one – and it became a running gag. Now, fans often shout “Shut up, Bird!” at her more than anything else. Even without realizing she was referencing a raven shown earlier, Karadec’s simple question, “Bird?”, immediately stood out.
The episode covered a lot of ground, including finally showing us what was inside Roman’s backpack – it turned out my guesses were wrong! We also got a bit of resolution to the argument between Morgan and Ava. Plus, we learned more about why the new captain acts so suspiciously, which made me think back to the showrunner’s hints about a possible love triangle.
Interestingly, the way Karadec admitted he hadn’t noticed the bird was pretty revealing. He said, “I guess I was just focused on that body!” It wasn’t a neutral statement like saying he was concentrating on the case or the victim; it was something a fan could easily interpret as a flirtatious comment. We can explore that implication further later, though.
If everything stays on track, we likely won’t have to wait long for Season 18 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. But before that arrives, Season 2 of High Potential will be airing Tuesdays at 10 p.m. Eastern on ABC. However, after the eighth episode, the show will go on a break for a while before returning later.
