When James Gunn became head of DC Studios, everyone started guessing about who the biggest villain in the new DC movies would be. It’s natural – every good superhero story needs a really powerful enemy, and for a lot of us fans, that villain has always seemed like it would be Darkseid. But Gunn’s hinted that things might not go that way, and the universe could be heading in a completely different direction!
During a recent conversation with New Rockstars on YouTube, the director of the upcoming Superman movie discussed the difficulties of planning the future of the new DC Universe. He also hinted that a famous DC villain might not be part of his immediate vision. Known for being secretive, the director’s comments suggest the DC Universe, which recently relaunched, could be heading in an unexpected direction over the next ten years. True to form, he also managed to give a nod to Zack Snyder while explaining his plans.
Bringing Darkseid in as the main villain isn’t necessarily the best move, for a number of reasons. Zack Snyder handled him really well in his films, and it feels like it’s following Marvel’s lead with Thanos.
As a movie fan, I was really struck by James Gunn’s recent comments. It’s cool to see him be so open about acknowledging the connections between what he’s building at DC and Zack Snyder’s work. He’s talked about Snyder’s impact before, but this was the first time he really pointed out how their visions actually overlap. It makes sense when you think about it – Snyder’s Justice League gave us a Darkseid that people are still talking about, and let’s be real, Marvel’s Thanos saga has been huge for over a decade. It’s interesting to see him draw those parallels.

It’s clear the director of Guardians of the Galaxy is well aware of existing superhero films and doesn’t want to repeat old ideas, particularly now that he’s starting fresh with a new DC universe. He seems more interested in introducing new challenges than just making things bigger and more destructive.
Just because Darkseid isn’t showing up right away doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of him. Honestly, DC has so many great villains to choose from, and this universe is huge! Plus, James Gunn has said his plan is to tell a long story, kind of like Marvel’s phases, but with its own unique feel. By the time we get to DC’s big crossover event – their version of Infinity War – the main villain could be totally different. Maybe someone more realistic, or even with a personal connection to Superman. Considering the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie is being set up as a Superman and Lex Luthor team-up against a larger threat, it’s easy to guess that’s where we’ll meet this new big bad. Personally, like a lot of fans, I’m putting my money on Brainiac being the mastermind behind it all.
While Darkseid could become a major villain in the future of DC stories, it likely won’t happen right away, and when it does, it’ll probably be a surprising approach. James Gunn seems determined to avoid repeating the cosmic villain storylines Zack Snyder explored, even though he respects Snyder’s work. He wants to create something new, and I think that’s a good direction for DC.
