Elizabeth Olsen has decided on something she’ll require for all her future film roles. Though she’s famous for playing the Scarlet Witch in Marvel movies and the WandaVision series on Disney+, Olsen has appeared in many different films throughout her career.
Beyond her work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Elizabeth Olsen has appeared in several other films, including The Assessment, His Three Daughters, Wind River, Ingrid Goes West, Godzilla, Martha Marcy May Marlene, and Liberal Arts. She’s also known for her roles in the TV series Sorry for Your Loss and Love & Death.
Elizabeth Olsen recently told InStyle that she’s only going to take roles in movies that will be shown in theaters. She explained that she values the shared experience of watching a film with an audience, comparing it to the energy of a live sporting event. Here’s what she had to say:
It’s vital for people to connect with each other in person and share experiences as a community. That’s why I enjoy sports – they bring people together around something they’re passionate about, and that’s a really powerful thing.
Olsen explains she’s okay with independent films being sold to streaming services, but she thinks movies should still have a theatrical release instead of being available only on streaming platforms.
I’m okay with independent films going straight to streaming services. However, I don’t want to create something that only ends up there – I want it to have a broader reach.
Many film studios are currently figuring out the best way to release movies – whether in theaters, through streaming, or a combination of both – and how to attract viewers back to cinemas. Elizabeth Olsen’s agreement that her new films will debut exclusively in theaters for a few weeks is a positive development for the theatrical experience.
Typically, Mary Olsen’s films first play in many cinemas before becoming available on streaming services. However, her movie His Three Daughters was different – it only showed in a few theaters for two weeks before becoming exclusively available on Netflix. Netflix hasn’t usually released its original films in theaters, and this now appears to be discouraging Olsen from working with them in the future.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’m still hearing rumors about whether Elizabeth Olsen will be back as Wanda/Scarlet Witch, and if she’ll be in Avengers: Doomsday. It’s interesting because she recently said she’d only do projects released in cinemas, and if she does appear in Doomsday or any of the other upcoming Marvel movies, she’d be sticking to that commitment. It’s good to know she’s staying true to her word, and I’m excited to see what happens!
The film Eternity, starring Elizabeth Olsen, explores a woman’s choice between her two husbands for all time. It will have a limited release in theaters on November 14th, followed by a wider release on November 26th. Olsen is encouraging viewers to experience the movie – and all her films – in theaters rather than waiting for them to be available for streaming.
