The final season of Stranger Things faced production delays because of the pandemic, the Hollywood strikes, and the creators needing some time off. But good news – you’ll be able to watch the last episodes and say farewell to Hawkins and its characters in November! According to Matt Duffer, the show’s villain, Vecna, will be even more terrifying than before – think Freddy Krueger, but much more powerful.
Compared to Vecna in season 4, the Demogorgon from season 1 seems much less threatening. Vecna, originally known as Henry Creel and once a test subject of Dr. Brenner, caused a terrible massacre at Hawkins Lab, which led to Eleven sending him to the Upside Down. The harsh environment of that dimension twisted him into the monstrous, vine-covered Vecna we see later, and he quickly began terrorizing Hawkins.
Vecna’s scheme to break into our world came to a head when he killed four people who had experienced significant trauma, creating four gateways. Now that Vecna has returned to Hawkins in the final episode of season four, Eleven and her friends are up against an enemy they weren’t ready for.
What can we expect from Vecna in Stranger Things Season 5?
Vecna was terrifying even when trapped in the Upside Down with his ability to break bones and remove eyes. But in season 5 of Stranger Things, he’ll be even more powerful now that he’s reached Hawkins. Matt Duffer recently hinted at this increased power in an interview with Empire.
The Duffer Brothers have nicknamed this season’s villain ‘Vecna 2.0’ because he’s become much more powerful and frightening. While previously he was dangerous because he could invade and control people’s minds, now he’s a physical threat too – incredibly violent and much stronger than before, almost like a supercharged Freddy Krueger.
Empire reports that the character of Henry Creel, who becomes Vecna, was inspired by Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street. Given the show’s homage to 1980s horror films, Vecna and Krueger share many traits. Both began as malicious humans, and their monstrous transformations and ability to inflict psychological terror make them equally frightening and difficult to comprehend.
As Vecna’s powers grow, threatening both the minds and bodies of those who stand against him, viewers can expect an exciting and intense new season. The first four episodes of Stranger Things season five will be available on Netflix starting November 26th.
