Michael J. Fox’s Back To The Future Guitar Has Been Missing For Decades, And The Story Behind The Famous Lost Item Deserves Its Own Documentary

Everyone who loves *Back to the Future* remembers the scene where Marty McFly seemingly invents rock and roll. While playing with Marvin Berry’s band in 1955, Marty performs “Johnny B. Goode,” and the movie suggests Marvin then called his brother, Chuck Berry, inspiring the iconic song. It’s a fun bit of movie magic that playfully connects fiction and reality.

Back to the Future, a beloved film celebrating its 40th anniversary with a limited re-release next month, is considered a classic by many, and one scene in particular is incredibly famous. The Gibson ES-345 guitar Marty McFly plays in that scene has been lost since filming. Even Michael J. Fox has talked about his unsuccessful search for it.

The Guitar Just Disappeared

In his new book, *Future Boy: Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space-Time Continuum*, Michael J. Fox discusses the story of a missing guitar, as reported by Us Weekly. He explains:

Over the years, the guitar featured in the film ‘Johnny B. Goode’ has become more famous for its scarcity than for the instrument itself. It’s become highly sought after simply because it’s unavailable.

I heard the craziest thing! Apparently, someone – a crew member or just someone hanging around the set – actually took Michael J. Fox’s guitar! He’s really bummed about it, and honestly, I can’t blame him. It’s not just about the money, though it was a valuable instrument, it’s about what it *meant* to him. He was saying…

I wish I’d realized how important it would be, but I didn’t see it at the time.

Honestly, I get the feeling someone on set realized how valuable it was and just…kept it. But as far as Fox knows right now, they have no idea who it is.

Someone does have it, but they aren’t coming forward – it’s likely hidden away in their collection, attic, or studio. They might be waiting long enough for the legal time limit for reporting the theft of a vintage guitar to pass.

It’s hard to say exactly how much this guitar is worth. Vintage Gibson ES-345s are already quite valuable, but this one is even more special because of its history with a Hollywood star. Given that the owner, Fox, is a guitarist himself, he’d likely be thrilled to add it to his collection.

Gibson Has Promised A Documentary If The Guitar Is Located

I’m always drawn to interesting stories about guitars, and this particular Gibson certainly has a history. Fox News reports that Gibson is actively searching for it and has even offered to create a documentary if it’s located.

Gibson is even funding a documentary about the search for my iconic red guitar. The film will be released once the guitar is found, so we’ll let you know as soon as there’s news!

Just like the hunt for Paul McCartney’s missing bass guitar is becoming a documentary, potentially hitting theaters in 2026, this story has all the makings of a great movie. Hopefully, the bass turns up soon!
