Everyone was talking about *KPop Demon Hunters* this summer, and it’s still incredibly popular! Now that it’s autumn and Halloween is approaching, it’s once again topping the charts on Netflix. While a sequel seems inevitable, many are wondering if a live-action version might also be in the works.
KPop Demon Hunter Directors Break Silence On Live-Action Movie Rumors
It seems like live-action remakes are incredibly popular right now, particularly for Disney. Universal has also joined the trend with a new live-action take on *How To Train Your Dragon*. When Maggie Kang, the creator and director of *KPop Demon Hunters*, was asked about the possibility of a live-action remake of her film, she shared her thoughts with BBC:
The show’s humor and overall style lend themselves perfectly to animation. Imagining these characters in a live-action setting just doesn’t feel right – it would be too realistic and wouldn’t work as well, in my opinion.
So, a few months ago, I read on TheWrap that Netflix was potentially going all-in on *KPop Demon Hunters* – like, an animated trilogy, a live-action movie, *and* a stage musical! Apparently, it really blew up on the streaming service. But I just found out from Helen Kang, who wrote and co-directed the original with Chris Appelhans, that those rumors aren’t true. She’s definitely not interested in seeing it turned into a live-action film, and Chris Appelhans feels the same way.
What’s great about animation is its limitless potential. I’ve noticed that many anime adaptations into live-action films just don’t quite feel natural or flow well.
Recently, Netflix has been adapting popular anime series into live-action shows, like with *Avatar: The Last Airbender* and *One Piece*. However, the directors of *KPop Demon Hunters* aren’t fans of this trend, believing that stories often lose their impact when moved from animation to live action, becoming awkward or unnatural.
And, They Make A Solid Point About Live-Action Remakes
With *KPop Demon Hunters* becoming Netflix’s most popular original series ever, and achieving both box office and music chart success, it’s likely Netflix will look to build on this momentum. Adding to the buzz, the singers behind the show’s songs recently went viral performing “Golden” live on *The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon*. You can check out that performance here…
A live-action movie seems like a smart business move, but the directors have a valid concern: it’s challenging to capture the unique charm of the characters in a realistic format. Balancing grounded portrayals with the over-the-top comedy fans expect would be difficult. I agree with their perspective, and I hope any future installments of *KPop Demon Hunters* are something they’re truly passionate about, just like the first one.
