Fans of the *Mortal Kombat* series have some exciting news as we approach Halloween, and it’s not just a new finishing move. Although the sequel to the 2021 reboot has been pushed back from 2025 to 2026, talk of a third movie is already starting – even before the second one is released!
According to ComicBook, Jeremy Slater, the screenwriter for the *Mortal Kombat* franchise, has already been hired to write the next film. This shows the studio is very pleased with the progress on the sequel, directed by Simon McQuoid. They clearly believe there’s a large audience eager for another intense, R-rated *Mortal Kombat* movie. Slater revealed this during a panel at New York Comic Con, stating:
New Line and Warner Bros. are thrilled with how the movie turned out. They believe there’s a large, eager audience for it, and they’re so confident that they’ve asked me to begin working on a sequel to Mortal Kombat.
This is a strong signal that Warner Bros. is very confident in the upcoming *Mortal Kombat* movie. It’s common for studios to think about sequels to popular franchises, but hiring a writer *before* the first movie is even released shows a real commitment. This suggests Warner Bros. believes the film will be good and is willing to invest significantly in things like special effects, promotion, and its release around the world. The first *Mortal Kombat* movie, released in 2021, did reasonably well, earning $84.4 million despite being available to stream on HBO Max at the same time it was in theaters during the pandemic. Now, with *Mortal Kombat II* planned for an exclusive theatrical release, the studio is clearly hoping for even greater success and to attract a wider audience beyond just fans of the game.

Viewers loved how brutally violent the first movie was, its inclusion of many characters from the game, and its fighting scenes, which felt more true to the source material than the 1995 film. The movie also hinted at a larger connected universe, and Karl Urban, known for his role in *The Boys*, will be appearing as the popular character Johnny Cage. Early glimpses suggest he’ll be a central figure in the next installment.
With Slater returning, the future of the film series feels more stable and creatively driven, which is important for building a lasting cinematic universe. His past work on shows like *Moon Knight* and *The Umbrella Academy* hints that the next installment will expand the story’s lore while maintaining the wild, energetic feel that sets *Mortal Kombat* apart from other video game movies.

You can stream the new Mortal Kombat movie on HBO Max, with plans starting at $9.99 per month (with ads). An HBO Max subscription unlocks a vast library of thousands of movies, TV shows, documentaries, and more. See the deal here.
The upcoming installment features a larger cast and with *Mortal Kombat 3* already in development, the next set of fights will be more intense and epic than ever before. Fans get the best of both worlds: a highly anticipated sequel with the potential to be a huge hit, and the exciting news that the story will continue.
The new movie, *Mortal Kombat II*, comes out on May 15, 2026, but the story won’t end there. Plans are already underway for *Mortal Kombat III*, which will likely be released at a later date.
