George R.R. Martin, the author behind the popular A Song of Ice and Fire series and executive producer of Game of Thrones, has explained again why the next book, The Winds of Winter, is taking so long. He recently shared that while working on the book, he also enjoys pursuing other writing projects.

At New York Comic Con, author Joe Hill playfully teased George R.R. Martin about the long wait for his book, *Winds of Winter*, by asking him about the New York Giants football team instead. Martin responded by admitting he’s always struggled to finish things on time. (Source: Entertainment Weekly)
The author acknowledged the ongoing discussion about the delay of ‘Winds of Winter,’ explaining that they’ve historically struggled to meet deadlines. They also expressed discomfort with breaking agreements or failing to deliver on time.
Martin reaffirmed his fondness for the books that inspired Game of Thrones, saying he still enjoys and is actively working on *Winds of Winter*. However, he also emphasized his enthusiasm for his other projects, like *Wild Cards* and the AMC series *Dark Winds*, explaining that he’s equally passionate about them.
George R.R. Martin has released five books in his popular A Song of Ice and Fire series, the most recent being A Dance with Dragons, published in 2011. He hasn’t made much progress on the last two books since then, focusing instead on the television shows based on his stories.
George R.R. Martin, 77, is heavily involved in expanding the Game of Thrones universe. He’s an executive producer on the successful series House of the Dragon, which has already aired two seasons. He’s also co-creating and executive producing another spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, expected to debut on HBO in January 2026.
