Disney is reportedly exploring another installment in *The Lion King* franchise, which isn’t unexpected considering how successful it’s been. The original *Lion King* film, released in 1994, was a huge hit that exceeded expectations, becoming the highest-grossing animated film of its time until *Finding Nemo*. It still holds the record for the top-grossing traditionally animated movie. *The Lion King* has proven to be incredibly profitable for Disney – the Broadway show is one of the longest-running in history, earning $1.9 billion, and both the live-action remake and its prequel were major box office successes.
According to reporter Daniel Richtman, Disney is planning another *Lion King* movie for theaters, though details about the plot are currently unknown. Disney hasn’t confirmed this news yet, so it’s currently just a rumor.
Is Disney Gearing Up for a Remake of a Direct-to-Video Classic?

Disney
It’s not surprising Disney is planning another *Lion King* movie. The 2019 remake was a huge success, earning $1.6 billion globally and becoming one of the highest-grossing films ever. Although the new film, *Mufasa: The Lion King*, had a slow start, it eventually earned a strong $722 million worldwide.
If Disney decides to make another *Lion King* movie, the most logical choice would be to adapt *The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride*, the sequel released in 1998. The character Kiara, Simba and Nala’s daughter, who first appeared in *The Lion King II*, was recently featured in *Mufasa: The Lion King*. Originally, *Simba’s Pride* included a character named Kovu who was intended to be Scar’s son, but this was changed to avoid making him and Kiara, the main romantic interests, related. Interestingly, *Mufasa: The Lion King* established that Mufasa and Scar aren’t actually brothers, a plot change that might have been made to allow for future stories in the *Lion King* universe.
After Snow White didn’t perform well in theaters, Disney appeared to be reconsidering its strategy of making live-action remakes, pausing plans for films like Aristocats and Bambi. But the huge success of the live-action Lilo & Stitch – earning over $1 billion worldwide – has shifted their focus to remaking movies from the last 35 years. A live-action Moana is planned for 2026, and Scarlett Johansson is rumored to be in talks to play Mother Gothel in a remake of Tangled. While Disney hasn’t officially announced another photorealistic version of The Lion King, it seems likely given its potential for profit – much more so than a third Tron movie ever was.
