New York Comic Con revealed some exciting news, including the premiere date for the upcoming series *Star Trek: Starfleet Academy*. The show will focus on a group of students at Starfleet Academy in San Francisco, giving *Star Trek* fans a glimpse into their experiences.
With the premiere of *Starfleet Academy* on Paramount+ approaching on January 15, 2026, the series’ creators, Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, have explained why it took almost 60 years of *Star Trek* to bring this show to life. They discussed with Entertainment Weekly the challenges of creating a series about young cadets while staying true to the spirit of *Star Trek*.
Creating compelling *Star Trek* stories with genuine risk is challenging, especially within the established universe,” Landau said. The new series, *Starfleet Academy*, takes place during the same timeframe as the final seasons of *Star Trek: Discovery*, over a century after a catastrophic event called “The Burn” decimated the Federation. The show will center on a fresh group of cadets learning the ropes at the academy, guided by instructors including the academy’s chancellor.
Landau emphasized that the show authentically portrays young characters facing genuine Star Trek adventures, complete with real dangers and challenging problems they must overcome.
In *Star Trek: Strange New Worlds*, Starfleet Academy isn’t just a school—it’s actually a Starfleet ship called the *U.S.S. Athena* that functions as the campus when it’s in port. As Alex Kurtzman explained, the idea was similar to a teaching hospital, where students learn best by facing real-world challenges and hands-on experience.
Landau and Kurtzman described the starship *Athena* as having a unique atmosphere, comparing it to an East Coast Ivy League college campus. According to Landau, while it appears like a *Star Trek* vessel, they intentionally incorporated elements to create a more vibrant and lived-in feel. Kurtzman explained that the set features two levels, including a large central area—the atrium—designed to allow for extended, uninterrupted scenes. He noted that actors could have a five-page conversation while walking through the atrium without needing any cuts.
