The Massive Star Warner Bros. Wanted For The Riddler in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Trilogy

Before Paul Dano played the Riddler, another actor was almost cast in the role for a Batman movie. As a new Batman film approaches, fans are enthusiastically discussing and suggesting actors to play key characters, especially Batman himself.

Fans frequently debate who would be the best actor to play Batman’s famous villains. Several actors, like Heath Ledger and Colin Farrell, have already delivered memorable performances. Interestingly, another well-known actor almost had the chance to add a villainous role to their career.

Warner Bros. Wanted Leonardo DiCaprio To Portray The Riddler

Bane, the main villain in *The Dark Knight Rises*, had a lot to live up to following the success of previous Batman films. While Tom Hardy’s performance was ultimately well-received, the head of Warner Bros. was very keen on him landing the role. David S. Goyer, a co-creator of the *Dark Knight* trilogy, shared in an interview with the *Happy Sad Confused* podcast that the studio approached him about casting Hardy at the premiere of *The Dark Knight*, indicating their strong preference.

We received a lot of suggestions, and I specifically recall the Warner Bros. executive at the premiere of *The Dark Knight* pushing for Leonardo DiCaprio to play the Riddler. He kept saying we needed to ask Chris Nolan to cast Leo in that role. But we don’t really operate that way – and I don’t mean to discredit his idea.

It’s clear why Warner Bros. heavily promoted Leonardo DiCaprio. By 2008, when *The Dark Knight* came out, he was already a major star, known for his roles in films like *Titanic*, *Catch Me If You Can*, *The Aviator*, and *The Departed*. He continued to build his legendary status throughout the 2010s, appearing in many highly praised movies such as *Inception*, *Django Unchained*, *The Wolf of Wall Street*, and *The Revenant*.

Even if Leonardo DiCaprio would have been a good choice to play the Riddler, *The Dark Knight Rises* moved away from the idea of a villain as unpredictable and eccentric as the Joker. Instead, the film featured Bane as the primary antagonist. Drawing inspiration from the *Batman: Knightfall* comic book storyline, *The Dark Knight Rises* shifted from the psychological warfare of Heath Ledger’s Joker to a more powerful, physically dominant villain who actually defeated Batman in a direct fight, demonstrating that Batman wasn’t invincible.

How The Riddler Would Have Changed The Dark Knight Rises

The Riddler is one of Batman’s best-known villains, and many would argue he’s even more famous than Bane, who didn’t appear until the 1990s. First appearing in Batman comics back in 1948, the Riddler has a long history with the Caped Crusader. So it makes sense that Warner Bros. would consider featuring him in a film after adapting Batman’s most famous foe, the Joker. However, including the Riddler in *The Dark Knight Rises* would have significantly altered the movie’s overall mood.

The Riddler, like many of Batman’s enemies, relies on his intelligence rather than physical strength. While Bane is also smart, he’s best known for his incredible physical power, which was highlighted in *The Dark Knight Rises* when he physically defeated Batman, allowing him to proceed with his evil schemes. The Riddler, however, would probably have taken a page from the Joker’s playbook and tormented Batman with carefully planned traps.

While both are dangerous, the Riddler differs from the Joker in his motivations. The Joker aims for widespread chaos, wanting to see the world destroyed, while the Riddler is primarily driven by his own intelligence and a desire to prove he’s smarter than Batman. He prefers to challenge Batman with puzzles and traps, rather than trying to completely devastate Gotham. Had the Riddler focused on this approach, *The Dark Knight Rises* would have been a more intellectual film with less at stake compared to the intense destruction seen in *The Dark Knight*.

However, the Riddler isn’t completely against committing serious crimes. In the DC Comics storyline *Zero Year*, he actually managed to flood Gotham City by destroying the reservoir, and Matt Reeves’ *The Batman* incorporated this plot point. Interestingly, *The Dark Knight Rises* could have explored a similar storyline with the Riddler as the villain, but ultimately used Bane and Talia al Ghul’s neutron bomb to threaten the city instead.

The Dark Knight Rises Made The Right Call With Bane

Following the Joker with the Riddler in *The Dark Knight Rises* would have felt too similar to *The Dark Knight*. The Riddler isn’t as famous or intimidating, and he wouldn’t have lived up to Heath Ledger’s incredible performance. Instead, the film created a villain who could actually challenge Batman’s strength and make him seem vulnerable.

While most fans consider the Joker to be a more iconic villain in Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, Bane is still a memorable character. Tom Hardy faced a tough challenge following Heath Ledger’s performance, but he succeeded in creating a widely imitated character thanks to his unique voice and how he delivered his lines. Unlike the Joker, who challenged Batman’s principles, Bane was the first villain to genuinely put Batman’s life in danger.

The biggest weakness in Bane’s story in The Dark Knight trilogy was the reveal that he was ultimately working for Talia al Ghul, making him a pawn in her plan.

Tom Hardy’s Bane completed Christian Bale’s run as Batman by allowing for impressive fight scenes that the Joker or Riddler couldn’t have provided. While Batman physically confronts the Joker in *The Dark Knight*, their fights wouldn’t have been a fair match. The last time Batman faced a truly equal opponent was in his first film, *Batman Begins*, when he battled his former teacher, Ra’s al Ghul, on a moving train.

Could Leonardo DiCaprio Star In A Future DC Adaptation?

Throughout his successful career, Leonardo DiCaprio has generally avoided appearing in superhero films, though he hasn’t completely ruled them out. He was once considered for a role in a movie directed by Zack Snyder, according to Snyder himself. Like many actors – Timothée Chalamet, for instance, has said DiCaprio encouraged him to steer clear of the genre – DiCaprio would probably take on a comic book role if the story was interesting enough.

Considering this, it’s unlikely the role will be a new version of the Riddler. The 2022 film *The Batman* featured Paul Dano as a very realistic take on the character, making it less probable that James Gunn’s upcoming DC project will revisit that same villain. Plus, Leonardo DiCaprio was the right age to play the part back in 2012, but now, at 50, he’d be a better fit for an older villain like Deathstroke.

Okay, so with Matt Reeves still planning out his Batman movies, I’m thinking Leonardo DiCaprio would actually *fit* really well in that universe. It’s got a similar vibe to Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, you know, really gritty and realistic. And honestly, Colin Farrell’s Penguin has been amazing – he’s won a ton of awards for it, which just proves how good these movies are getting. Since *The Batman – Part II* is still early in development, there’s totally room for DiCaprio to show up in that one, or even the third movie down the line. I’d love to see it!

James Gunn’s new DC Universe is just getting started, and it has the potential to gain the same respect in Hollywood. Because the DCU is already using many lesser-known characters, there are lots of possibilities for actors like Leonardo DiCaprio to join the franchise. Ultimately, DiCaprio could still star in a DC movie if he’s offered a role and script that really interests him.
