Early reviews for *Tron: Ares* are surfacing, and most critics aren’t impressed with the new Disney film featuring Jared Leto.
What are the Tron: Ares reviews saying?
Currently, “Tron: Ares” has a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 58 reviews. While the film hasn’t been well-received, its score is a bit better than the 2010 film “Tron: Legacy” (which scored 51%). However, both are lower-rated than the original “Tron” from 1982, which has a 61% rating.
William Bibbiani of TheWrap was blunt, praising the film’s soundtrack as “great” but calling the movie itself “terrible.” David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter was a bit more forgiving, noting it wasn’t a sci-fi masterpiece, but still a surprisingly fun summer movie.
David Fear of Rolling Stone noted that the Tron franchise faced a difficult choice: start over or end. He believes Disney opted for a refresh with ‘Ares,’ but ultimately feels the series is finished regardless. Brian Truitt from USA Today shared a similar view, highlighting the film’s music and Jeff Bridges’ performance, but stating that visiting the futuristic world in this third ‘Tron’ movie feels like a burden.
Despite some criticism, the film received praise as well. Liz Shannon Miller of Consequence called it a “big spectacle,” and David Ehrlich from Indiewire noted it was “relevant, palatable, and undemanding” enough to potentially launch a new Tron franchise. Jonathan Sim of ComingSoon also enjoyed the film, describing it as a “stellar cinematic experience.”
Tron: Ares boasts an impressive cast led by Jared Leto, and also stars Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson, Jeff Bridges, and Sarah Desjardins.
Tron: Ares is the next installment in Disney’s Tron series, following the original 1982 film and 2010’s Tron: Legacy. Joachim Rønning, known for directing films like Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) and Young Woman and the Sea (2024), is at the helm. He previously co-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) with Espen Sandberg. Jesse Wigutow wrote the screenplay.
