Over the years, many horror films have proven too unsettling for audiences. Movies like Cannibal Holocaust, Martyrs, The Human Centipede, and Nekromantik really stretched the limits of what viewers could handle, focusing more on shocking images than a strong storyline to grab attention. However, A Serbian Film is widely considered the most disturbing horror movie ever made. Even after 15 years, it’s still a film that many wish they hadn’t seen, and some reports even claim it profoundly impacted one woman’s life.
Depending on who you ask, A Serbian Film is seen as either a meaningless movie, or a powerful political statement. The director, Srđan Spasojević, has explained that the controversial film is “a diary of how the Serbian government has harmed us,” and further stated:
This is about how leaders with overwhelming power can manipulate you into doing things against your will. To truly understand it, you need to recognize the harm and force involved. You have to feel the violence to know what it’s about.
A former pornographic actor (Srdjan Todorovic) facing financial hardship agrees to appear in a movie. He doesn’t realize the film involves disturbing and extreme themes – including the exploitation of children and corpses – and that it could ultimately cost him his life.
Did ‘A Serbian Film’ Really Ruin a Girl’s Life?

Unearthed Films
Look, it’s well known that A Serbian Film caused people to walk out of screenings – it’s a seriously graphic movie. But the story about it actually *ruining* someone’s life? That came from a post I saw on Reddit. Someone over in the r/horror subreddit shared a story they’d overheard in a Chinese restaurant. Apparently, a college student had to drop out of school and seek hospitalization after watching A Serbian Film. It’s a pretty wild claim, but that’s the story as it was recounted:
So, I accidentally overheard a girl telling her friend a pretty shocking story. Apparently, a week into college, her roommate’s boyfriend brought over what he called a ‘scary movie’ – and it turned out to be A Serbian Film. According to the girl telling the story, it really traumatized her roommate. She said it was so bad that she had to withdraw from school and ended up needing to go to the hospital, get on medication, and go through a lot of therapy. She was completely devastated while she was recounting it, and I felt a little guilty for listening in, but she was speaking quite loudly.
For most films, we’d dismiss the story as far-fetched, but given the powerful impact A Serbian Film has had on viewers, it’s possible the events actually occurred. We can’t know for certain, but this much is clear: A Serbian Film is definitely among the most – if not *the* most – disturbing horror movies ever created. Watch it if you dare, but don’t say we didn’t give you a warning.
