A major topic of discussion and speculation among fans of superhero films right now is who will be cast as Batman in the official new DC Universe. James Gunn, who leads DC Studios, has mentioned that numerous actors have contacted him hoping to play The Dark Knight. And that’s on top of all the celebrities who have publicly stated their interest.
Ben Barnes, who first gained recognition in 2008 with a role in , recently attended the Fan X Salt Lake Comic Convention to participate in a discussion. During a conversation with Maggie Lovitt from , the English actor and musician expressed his willingness to join the DCU, stating that Batman would be his ideal role, adding the following:
Just call me. I’ve got Bruce Wayne ready to go.
The possibility of Barnes playing a significant role in the DCU came up while talking about his childhood love for heroes. He mentioned his parents recently showed him old home videos of him dressing up as characters like Robin Hood, Spider-Man, and Batman. Barnes explained that he particularly enjoyed dressing as Batman, and this fueled his desire to portray Bruce Wayne in the upcoming live-action version. He’s keen to bring the newest iteration of the character to life.
If Barnes lands the role over many other hopefuls, it would be the most significant opportunity of his career to date. He’s already proven himself with leading roles in popular shows like HBO’s Westworld, Netflix’s Shadow and Bone, and MGM+’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Institute. Barnes seems well-suited to the character DCU is reportedly envisioning, though perhaps a bit less bulky than the character’s depiction in the animated version.
Ben Barnes Is No Stranger To Comic Book Roles Already
Landing the highly sought-after role of Batman would be Barnes’ first time playing a superhero, but he’s no stranger to comic book adaptations. He actually already has a place in DC history, having first appeared on the big screen in the 2007 film Stardust, which was based on Neil Gaiman’s 1999 fantasy graphic novel, playing the role of young Dunstan Thorn.
The actor is most famous for playing a character in the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe series, The Punisher. He plays Billy Russo, a good friend and fellow former U.S. Marine Corpsman to Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal). As comic book fans likely predicted, this war veteran-who later becomes the CEO of Anvil-is revealed to have a hidden side and carries secrets connected to Castle’s difficult history.
It would be great to see Barnes move from appearing in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU) to the DC Universe (DCU), especially in a heroic role. Playing one of the most recognizable characters in DC history would be a refreshing change for the actor. Now, James Gunn just needs to offer him the part.
The Brave and the Bold has no official release date at the moment.
