As a huge DC fan, I’ve been really captivated by their new Absolute Universe line. It’s fascinating how they’re reimagining all these classic heroes! I’m especially intrigued by Absolute Superman; the idea of Kal-El arriving on Earth as a teen instead of an infant is a bold move. Beyond just the superhero stuff, it’s cool to see them tackling relevant themes like artificial intelligence (AI). All of this really impacts how they’re updating a classic Superman setting for this fresh take.
Written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by Rafa Sandoval, Absolute Superman #12 takes readers back to Kal-El’s first experiences on Earth. Adjusting to life here was incredibly difficult for him. Although he and his parents fought against the oppressive government of Krypton, he discovers that life on Earth is even more challenging. He quickly clashes with the Lazarus Corporation, a powerful organization seizing control of vast areas across the globe.
Following some initial attempts to connect with others that unfortunately lead to hardship for the kind Kent family, the young Superman decides he needs to live separately from people. His AI friend, Sol, argues against this, pointing out that even though he doesn’t need food or sleep, he still needs to interact with others. Nevertheless, Sol agrees to grant Kal-El the solitude he wants, partly just to get a little peace and quiet. To do this, Sol builds a virtual Fortress of Solitude for the young hero.
Absolute Superman Fortress of Solitude Explained
The Absolute Universe Fortress of Solitude isn’t like the well-known crystal structure in the Arctic or Antarctica. While it *is* made of crystal, it’s considerably smaller. In fact, calling it the Sensory Deprivation Chamber of Solitude might be a more fitting description.
When Kal-El needs privacy, Sol reshapes his nanites into a crystalline cocoon surrounding Absolute Superman. This effectively shields him from the outside world, making him undetectable while he recharges. Because Sol resides within his suit, this version of Kal-El carries his Fortress of Solitude with him, much like a turtle and its shell.
Absolute Superman #12 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
