The creators of the anime recently shared the reasoning behind its perplexing conclusion in a new commentary featured in the Japanese DAIMA Blu-ray collection. The Dragon Ball DAIMA Blu-ray set includes a special commentary track for Episode 1, with contributions from series producer Akio Iyoku and co-directors Aya Komaki and Yoshitaka Yashima.
A fan-made translation of the commentary is now available online, giving us a look into what the creators were discussing. The group shares some new and interesting details about how Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 1 ended, and how viewers were confused by the conclusion. Interestingly, it seems the creators intended for some of that confusion to happen. They reflect on how fans reacted to the ending, revealing it wasn’t entirely unintentional. More details are available in the translated commentary.
Dragon Ball DAIMA Staff Made Episode 1’s Ending Confusing On Purpose
I was reading the commentary for Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 1, and it’s fascinating! Apparently, the team really wrestled with how to finish that first episode. Akira Toriyama-sensei gave incredibly detailed instructions for each episode – even the dialogue! – but the directors still had to work out how to actually *make* it all happen visually. They knew, thanks to Toriyama’s notes, that the ending needed to have Shenron granting Gomah’s wish and the Z-Fighters becoming kids, but they were worried that this might be too confusing for viewers. It’s amazing how much thought went into even just the first episode! I can’t wait to see more!
It turned out they were right. The episode ends with Gomah wishing to Shenron that all the Z Fighters become children around the age of first graders. The credits then roll, showing the characters stuck in a bizarre, swirling vortex – Bulma even spills her wine for added drama. Although it’s obvious the group was affected by Gomah’s wish, the episode’s cliffhanger ending – with everyone screaming – might leave some viewers confused.
The team intended this reaction, at least in part. Staff from DAIMA shared that viewers were confused because the episode doesn’t show the whole group as children and ends only with a scream. Aya Komaki, the co-director of Dragon Ball DAIMA, confirmed that ending the episode this mysteriously – leaving room for interpretation – was completely on purpose.
I’ve been really enjoying the new Blu-ray release of Dragon Ball DAIMA. It’s packed with fun discoveries, extra details, and a peek behind the curtain at how the series was made. It’s given me a much deeper understanding of this anime, which felt like a real departure for the Dragon Ball creator. There’s even been some fascinating information that’s come out of it, making it a must-have for dedicated fans. Sadly, there’s no official word yet on when an English version will be available.
You can now watch all of Dragon Ball DAIMA on Crunchyroll, with both the English and Japanese audio options available.
