I’ve been following Marvel Comics for the last year, and they’ve been steadily leading up to this big, new post-apocalyptic storyline. It’s called the Age of Revelation, and it’s a really interesting twist – we see Cypher, formerly of the X-Men, taking on the mantle of a world conqueror. He’s essentially become the heir to Apocalypse, now calling himself Revelation. And right from the start, the first issue makes it clear this isn’t going to be a walk in the park; they immediately raise the stakes by killing off a major player in the mutant world. It’s a bold move, and definitely grabbed my attention.
Written by Jed MacKay and illustrated by Ryan Stegman, Age of Revelation Overture #1 focuses on the mutant hero Cyclops. He and his teammate Beast are unexpectedly transported to the near future by Magneto. The once leader of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants now guides what’s left of the X-Men, believing they require their most capable leader and brilliant mind.
Magneto explains that things got much worse after Revelation went back to the X-Men in their timeline. Revelation caused a division within the team, and his supporters seized control of the eastern United States. As the heir of Apocalypse, Revelation is now incredibly powerful – he once could understand and speak any language. Now, he can kill people simply by speaking. However, he usually prefers to turn his enemies into “babels” – individuals whose minds are shattered and who can no longer communicate with anyone else. This leaves them isolated and helpless.
Which X-Men character dies first in Age of Revelation?
Just as the rebels are about to formulate a strategy, their base comes under attack by a mind-controlled Wolverine. Now called Revelation’s “Angel of Death”, Logan is even more ferocious and unpredictable than before. Interestingly, he does exhibit some level of awareness, and his initial target is the mutant who represents the greatest threat to him: Magneto.
Magneto’s unexpected death immediately establishes the serious mood of Age of Revelation. The loss of such a powerful X-Man clearly demonstrates just how much is at risk in this new reality. This sends a strong message, even though this alternate future is probably temporary and the characters who die in this story won’t stay dead.
X-Men: Age of Revelation Overture #1 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
