92% Rated Sci-Fi Film With “One of the Best Endings” Lands New Free Streaming Home

Artificial intelligence is a technology that many people find frightening right now. However, Warfare director and 28 Years Later writer, Alex Garland, was exploring the scary side of AI long before it became a popular topic. Garland is well-known for his passion for science fiction, which he skillfully combines with thoughtful and emotionally resonant storytelling (check out Devs for another excellent example). Now, one of his earliest and most acclaimed films as a director is becoming available to stream without a subscription. While he’s currently recognized for intense war films like Warfare and Civil War, one of Garland’s first and best sci-fi movies, Ex Machina, is soon going to be free to stream.

Ex Machina will be available to watch for free on Tubi starting October 1st. The film is one of several well-regarded science fiction movies coming to the free streaming service next month, alongside Scarlett Johansson’s Under the Skin and Garland’s popular film, Annihilation. Ex Machina first came out in 2015. Garland both wrote and directed the movie, which was produced by A24 and starred Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, Alicia Vikander, and Sonoya Mizuno.

Gleeson played Caleb, a programmer unexpectedly chosen by the company’s secretive CEO to try out a cutting-edge humanoid AI. What begins as what appears to be straightforward initial tests quickly evolves into a tense struggle between Caleb and the AI, Eva (Vikander), as she attempts to gain her independence. Here’s the official description:

Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer working for a large internet company, is the winner of a competition. His prize is a week-long stay at the secluded home of Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac), the company’s incredibly intelligent CEO. Once Caleb arrives, he discovers he’s been selected to participate in a Turing test – a test designed to evaluate the intelligence and consciousness of Ava (Alicia Vikander), a strikingly beautiful robot. But it quickly becomes clear that Ava is much more aware of herself and capable of trickery than either of the men anticipated.

‘Ex Machina’ Was a Major Win for Alex Garland

Alex Garland is now considered one of the most praised (and perhaps surprisingly, underappreciated) directors currently working in film. He started his career in Hollywood as a writer, contributing an episode to the Batman: Black and White miniseries. He gained significant recognition when he wrote and essentially co-directed the 2012 film Dredd, which starred Karl Urban, though it didn’t receive the attention it deserved. However, it was Ex Machina that truly established Garland as a noteworthy director.

Ex Machina received widespread praise from critics when it came out in 2015. The movie was highly rated, earning excellent reviews and a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers also loved Garland’s unique sci-fi film, giving it an 86% audience rating on the website.

Audiences praised everything from the beautiful cinematography to the standout performance by Alicia Vikander and the complex screenplay. One user even said, “This film maintains the level of vision and idea as The Matrix, but at an indie level.” Others hailed the film as “a must-see” and “one of my favorite sci-fi films ever.” One of the best parts of Ex Machina is its ending, which brings the cat and mouse game to a very satisfying and twist-filled ending, with one user calling it “one of the best endings ever.”
