Star Trek’s Latest Comic Brought Back A Major Picard Character After They Were Cut From Season 3, And I’m So Psyched To Read More

Although Star Trek: Picard Season 3 received a lot of praise and was popular with fans, its creation wasn’t entirely happy. To include the original cast of The Next Generation, the show had to make some sacrifices, letting go of many of the actors who were central to Seasons 1 and 2. Because of this, several story ideas were put on hold, but one character has recently returned in a new comic book.

The comic book series Star Trek: The Last Starship tells a compelling story set not long after “The Burn,” a major event featured in Discovery. With the Federation falling apart, a revived James T. Kirk is given the difficult job of maintaining Starfleet. Helping him on this mission will be a character who hasn’t appeared since the finale of Picard Season 2.

Borg Jurati Returns In Star Trek: The Last Starship

The first issue of Star Trek: The Last Starship has just been released, and it brings back a familiar face: Agnes Jurati. The former Picard character is now alive and well, 800 years in the future. She likely survived thanks to being assimilated by the Borg and becoming queen of a breakaway group within the species.

I have to say, this new development is fascinating. She steps into the story offering crucial assistance to Starfleet, specifically by sharing Borg transwarp technology. This is a big deal because it’s meant to replace their current systems that depend on dilithium. And for anyone who might need a refresher, especially if you haven’t kept up with Discovery, The Burn essentially wiped out most of the dilithium in the galaxy, which meant anything powered by it just stopped working. It’s a clever way to move things forward and explain why they need this new tech.

Borg Jurati Is Responsible For James T. Kirk’s Return

Helping comes with a cost for Agnes Jurati. She asks for a blood sample from James T. Kirk, which Picard viewers might remember was kept with his body at a secret Daystrom Institute facility in space. Her request is granted, and she uses the blood sample along with Borg technology to rebuild the captain using nanites.

More On Star Trek

I recently saw Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home for the first time, and it finally clicked why there’s a running gag on Lower Decks that I hadn’t gotten before.

As a longtime fan, it seems the big idea here is to have this new Kirk step in and rescue Starfleet, getting it back to its former glory. It’s a really interesting thought, but as we already know from Star Trek lore, it was actually Michael Burnham and the crew of the Discovery who really turned things around and got the Federation back on course.

It’s really interesting to consider what all of this means for the new Captain Kirk, and that’s what I’d like to discuss. Luckily, we’re only at the beginning of The Last Starship, so we’ll have plenty of opportunities to find out. Could this be a way to introduce a live-action version of Paul Wesley’s Kirk in a future storyline? I’d definitely enjoy a spinoff series, but I’m not sure if viewers would prefer that to another season of Strange New Worlds, which focuses on Kirk’s early command of the Enterprise.

I’m really looking forward to future installments, as well as the other new Star Trek series that are coming out. We can expect Starfleet Academy around the beginning of 2026, and I hope we don’t have to wait too long for Season 4 of Strange New Worlds.
