Marvel Studios is well-known for keeping details about its future movies and TV series closely guarded, but the Russo Brothers – two of their most frequent collaborators – sometimes offer a little insight. These filmmakers have often given fans clues about what’s coming, sparking online investigations, and the latest project is now getting the same treatment.
The filmmaking team released a photo from the set of the fifth Avengers film. The picture shows Joe sitting in a chair, with a large two-story green screen and filming equipment all around him. It was shared with the caption, “Look hard…,” suggesting that a hint about what’s coming in Avengers: Doomsday might be hidden within the black-and-white image.
Dedicated fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe would definitely take a close look at the photo as soon as it was released on September 30th, and the reactions have been varied. Many comments showed clear frustration with these confusing marketing strategies, while others were simply jokes based on the idea that the Russo Brothers are playfully teasing fans and that the photo doesn’t actually reveal anything important.
However, some people who know the filmmakers often hint at things in their work think they’ve figured out a mystery. An Instagram user named bob_damen noticed that the screen tilted to the left of Joe looks like an “A,” the dots on the big green screen make the letters “V” and “S,” and there seem to be several X’s on the right side of the picture. This user thinks this is a hint that Avengers: Doomsday is actually based on the 2012 comic book series, Avengers vs. X-Men.
It’s not the first time people have had this suspicion, and it’s easy to see why. The new superhero movie boasts a huge cast, including familiar faces from the MCU like Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor, and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. It also features actors such as Patrick Stewart (who returned as Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Ian McKellan as Magneto. We probably won’t get official confirmation of this idea until the movie comes out, or at least when the first trailer is released.
The Russo Brothers Have A History Of Cryptic Clues
As we’ve seen before, this new photo from the set of Avengers: Doomsday isn’t the first time the Russo brothers have used clever tricks to get fans excited. The image brought to mind a similar situation in 2018, when they shared another picture with the caption “Look hard…” featuring set props carefully arranged around Joe. This was their subtle way of revealing that the sequel to Avengers: Infinity War would be called Avengers: Endgame.
This isn’t the only puzzle linked to this huge event; the way it was initially revealed was quite unusual. Back in March 2025, Marvel Studios posted a live video on X. It showed the actors’ names on the backs of folding chairs, and they revealed one chair every 25 minutes for five hours! Just recently, the Russos also posted a fuzzy picture on Instagram with the message, “Doom is coming.” We can probably expect even more surprises like these in the future.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
