No one can truly escape their history, particularly when that history involves violence. This is something the brand-new, and very unwilling, action hero will quickly discover in his next thriller. The film promises a lot of harsh violence and a feeling of being completely alone as Magnussen’s Lucas Frost attempts to outrun his past. As often happens in these action thriller stories, the consequences of past actions – revenge and payback – will eventually catch up to him.
Called , the initial trailer for the thriller has been released, hinting at a familiar story: a man raised amidst violence who desires a life of peace. Despite wanting to escape his past, Magnussen’s character will be forced to confront his heritage and protect his own when dangerous threats emerge, ultimately needing to take up arms to defend what he values.
John-Michael Powell’s second feature film, Violent Ends, was written and directed by him and features Billy Magnussen (No Time to Die, Aladdin), Barbie, Sin City, and The Empty Man. It also stars Emmy Award winner Kate Burton (Grey’s Anatomy) and Academy Award winner Ray McKinnon (Knox Goes Away). The thriller will be in theaters on October 31st. You can find the official description and watch the trailer below…
The movie VIOLENT ENDS takes place in the Ozark Mountains and centers around Lucas Frost (Magnussen), a good man who grew up in a family known for its criminal activity and violence. While Lucas attempts to build a quiet life with his partner, Emma (Shipp), he’s unexpectedly forced back into the family’s dangerous world when his cousin, Eli, commits a violent armed robbery.
Billy Magnussen Promises to Be a Captivating Unexpected Action Hero
Writer and director John-Michael Powell first directed a full-length feature film with the 2022 dark drama The Send-Off. Now, with Violent Ends, he brings that same dramatic feel to the action genre, marking a shift for both him and actor Billy Magnussen. Magnussen is best known for comedic roles in films like Lilo & Stitch, Game Night, and The Franchise. While this is his first time leading an action movie like Violent Ends, Magnussen isn’t a stranger to action. He previously appeared alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in Amazon’s remake of Road House and fought alongside Daniel Craig in his final James Bond film, No Time to Die.
Although it might be surprising to see the usually funny actor with a shotgun and a very serious expression, Magnussen has always been a remarkably talented performer. Hopefully, this different kind of role in Violent Ends – and the chance to play a main character – will finally bring him the appreciation he’s earned.
In a press release, Ayo Kepher-Maat, VP of Acquisitions and Productions at IFC Films, highly commended director John-Michael Powell for creating “a captivating story of revenge, driven by Billy Magnussen’s powerfully magnetic performance that consistently impresses.” Kepher-Maat stated that viewers of VIOLENT ENDS will be completely immersed in the elements that make a revenge thriller so compelling.
