A popular series has been cancelled at . While the streamer-known for dramatic shows like Paradise and The Handmaid’s Tale-has found success with comedies such as , even a talented cast, including Emmy-winner Nathan Lane, couldn’t prevent one of its shows from being cancelled.
I was really disappointed to hear that Mid-Century Modern got canceled by Hulu. It’s a shame, especially since I was enjoying the show and its fantastic cast – Lane, Matt Bomer, Nathan Lee Graham, and the wonderful, late Linda Lavin. It only had one season, starting in March 2025, which is a real bummer. I remember hearing some buzz before the show even came out. And the guest stars! They had some great ones, like Pamela Adlon (King of the Hill), Richard Kind, Rhea Perlman, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Cheri Oteri. It’s always sad when a show with so much potential doesn’t get a chance to shine.
Max Mutchnick, one of the show’s creators, announced the cancellation on Instagram. He shared a photo of the cast and wrote: “Ten great episodes… Not enough. But we loved making every single one of them. We’re gonna miss our very special show. Thanks to everyone who watched.”
Mutchnick developed the series with David Kohan, also known for creating Will and Grace. Ryan Murphy contributed as an executive producer on Mid-Century Modern, with Lane and Bomer also taking on executive producer roles. James Burrows served as an executive producer for the show and directed all ten episodes under the 20th Television banner.
The show has received positive reviews, earning an 88% score from critics and an 80% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Although it premiered to some buzz, Mid-Century Modern didn’t attract a large viewership and never made it onto Nielsen’s Top 10 list of most-watched streaming shows during its 10 episodes.
The “Gender-Swapped Golden Girls” had a Promising Start
Mid-Century Modern was playfully called the “gender-swapped Golden Girls.” The show’s description explains that it centers on three close, gay friends who are getting older. After a sudden loss, they decide to share a home together in Palm Springs, living with the one who has the means and his mother. As a close-knit, unconventional family, they demonstrate that even through tough times, there’s always someone to offer support-and maybe suggest a little cosmetic surgery!”
Lane played the role of Bunny Schneiderman. After a close friend passed away, Bunny, along with his best friends Jerry Frank and Arthur Broussard – played by Bomer and Graham respectively – relocated to Palm Springs. Lavin portrayed Bunny’s mother, Sybil, and welcomed the three friends into her home upon their arrival in Palm Springs. This provided them with a place to stay as they adjusted to their new lives.
Before the series premiered, Jeff Ewing of Collider shared with Rotten Tomatoes: “Mid-Century Modern is a comedy you won’t want to miss, and it feels right at home alongside classic sitcoms as well as shows today.” Sarabeth Pollock from What to Watch also commented on Rotten Tomatoes, stating, “Thanks to its clever writing, suggestive humor, and amazing actors, Mid-Century Modern is the funniest new comedy this year.”
Soon after the show began streaming on Hulu, Lane explained that a series like Mid-Century Modern was much needed. Graham added that having a cast with “a fully well-rounded Black queer character” was a positive step, and he expressed how “so glad and so grateful” he was to be involved.
The first season of Mid-Century Modern is streaming on Hulu.
