A new Swamp Thing movie has been planned for several years. It was initially announced as part of a group of projects called Gods and Monsters back in early 2023, but progress has been rather slow. James Mangold was originally set to direct, but he then shifted his attention to the critically acclaimed Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, and he’s also committed to directing a future Star Wars film. While the movie seems to be in the very beginning stages of production, Vincent D’Onofrio is eager to be involved and is hoping to play the main role in this horror film.
It’s clear the Full Metal Jacket actor has really resonated with Marvel enthusiasts for his portrayal of Wilson Fisk, also known as The Kingpin, in Daredevil and Daredevil: Born Again. However, during a panel at L.A. Comic Con this weekend, he discussed his interest in playing Swamp Thing and explained why he’s so drawn to the character. According to D’Onofrio,
I’ve always been drawn to people who are hurting, and he definitely fits that description. He’s not just going through a breakup; it feels like his entire life is falling apart. It reminds me of the story of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He’s not conventionally handsome, he lives in difficult circumstances – it’s a tough life, you know? But despite everything, he’s capable of love, and that’s really powerful.
Those familiar with Swamp Thing comics see him as a strong, yet sorrowful character, and allowing an actor with Vincent D’Onofrio’s skills to explore that complexity would likely create a truly amazing film. The character possesses a nearly divine link to the natural world, but is unfortunately seen as a creature and remains isolated from the life he once knew as a human.
Talented writers like the renowned Len Wein and Alan Moore have wonderfully developed the character. Vincent D’Onofrio remembers being deeply affected by the character’s internal thoughts while reading Swamp Thing comics when he was younger. However, he doesn’t believe he has much chance of ever portraying the Avatar of the Green, stating,
The storytelling was really powerful, and if you recall the details, it was incredibly emotional and often very moving. It truly surprised me. I first encountered Swamp Thing when I was in my late 20s or 30s, and what really draws me in is the character’s emotional depth. It’s a role I know I’ll never have the opportunity to play.
It’s not entirely clear why D’Onofrio believes he’s unlikely to get the role, but it’s important to remember that DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have been strategically gauging interest recently. If they acknowledge the actor’s enthusiasm for the part, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of him being cast. It’s certainly not impossible, if they recognize his passion.
I’m really hyped for the Swamp Thing movie! It doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, but trust me, as soon as TopMob gets any news or updates, we’ll share them with you right away. And if you’re a fan of Vincent D’Onofrio like me, you can get your fix by watching him as Wilson Fisk in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again – it’s streaming on Disney+! We’re all eagerly waiting for him to return as that powerful villain in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, and we’ll keep you posted!
