For years, Aaron Sorkin has talked about making a sequel to the 2010 hit movie, *The Social Network*. It was confirmed in June that he’s now writing and directing it. While the first film was directed by David Fincher and starred Jesse Eisenberg, this new movie will be different. Jeremy Strong, known for *Succession*, will be playing Mark Zuckerberg. Initially, the change in actors felt significant, but knowing the plot details and official title of *The Social Network 2*, along with the release date, makes it easier to accept.
The Social Reckoning Comes Out In October 2026
Sony Pictures has set an October 9, 2026 release date for their new film, *The Social Reckoning*. It will be released alongside *The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender* from Paramount Pictures and *Other Mommy* from Universal Pictures. October will also see the release of an untitled film by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and a reboot of *Street Fighter*.
Similar in style to *The Social Network*, *The Social Reckoning* tells the real story of Facebook engineer Frances Heughan (played by Mikey Madison of *Anora*) and her collaboration with Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horowitz (played by Jeremy Allen White of *The Bear*) to expose Facebook’s biggest secrets. The film also stars Jeremy Strong and Bill Burr, who plays a character that is either fictional or based on multiple people, according to *The Hollywood Reporter*.
I Actually Like That Mark Zuckerberg Isn’t The Movie’s Central Character
I’m still a little disappointed Jesse Eisenberg isn’t returning as Mark Zuckerberg in *The Social Reckoning*. His performance in *The Social Network* was fantastic-he was even nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe-and it would have been interesting to see him revisit the role today.
After learning more about the plot of the new movie, Jeremy Strong playing Mark Zuckerberg makes a bit more sense. It seems Zuckerberg won’t be the main focus this time around. The film, titled *The Social Reckoning*, centers on the leak of internal Facebook documents that led to *The Wall Street Journal*’s ‘The Facebook Files’ series. The story will primarily follow Frances Haugen and Jeff Horowitz, the people behind the leak, though Jeremy Strong will still appear significantly. Unlike *The Social Network*, this film isn’t about Zuckerberg himself, but rather the events surrounding the leaked information.
I’m not saying the new movie, *The Social Reckoning*, will be as good as *The Social Network*, but I want to watch it before I form an opinion. I’m actually fine with Jesse Eisenberg not being in this one, and I’m curious to see Jeremy Strong’s take on Mark Zuckerberg, even if it’s a smaller role. Aaron Sorkin has proven he can direct well with films like *Molly’s Game*, *The Trial of the Chicago 7*, and *Being The Ricardos*. So, I’m definitely interested to see how he handles directing *The Social Reckoning* after writing the script.
