Bryan Andrews on why Marvel Zombies had just 4 episodes

I was reading an interview with Bryan Andrews, the director of *Marvel Zombies*, and he explained why the show only got four episodes. Basically, it came down to budget and time! He said they were still figuring things out as they were making it, and weren’t sure how much they’d ultimately get to do. Apparently, they originally planned it as a full-length movie, but because of the whole Spider-Man rights situation with Sony, they couldn’t make that happen.

Originally, Andrews intended to release the story as a full-length movie, envisioning an epic film around two and a half hours long. When that didn’t work out, the team decided to present it as a four-part book series instead. While he feels the book format is effective, Andrews admits he wished they had more time to develop each installment further and really savor the more subtle scenes.

As a fan, it was interesting to hear the director explain how things went down. Apparently, they initially planned a movie, but then hit a wall because of Spider-Man’s involvement. It all came down to contracts and rules set by Sony – they were surprised by how much control Sony had! It sounds like they had to quickly rethink their plans, which is why the series ended up being structured with shorter, faster-paced episodes. It wasn’t a creative choice, but a necessary one based on the logistics.

Even with limitations, Andrews and Marvel Animation established a foundation for future storylines. Andrews mentioned there were still many stories to tell and that he and Brad Winderbaum had already begun planning a potential next season. Initially, they envisioned a more fantastical, medieval world, but they simplified it to ensure the characters remained recognizable. He believes positive fan feedback could encourage Marvel to invest more time and resources into a possible second season.
