Matt Roller, the creator of Netflix’s new animated series *Haunted Hotel*, has revealed what needs to happen for a second season to be made. Roller is also known for his writing work on *Rick and Morty*, a show that has spawned three spin-offs. Just days after *Haunted Hotel*’s release, it seems like a renewal is possible.
Matt Roller discussed his and Netflix’s hopes for a second season of *Haunted Hotel* after the show premiered on September 19th. With lots of Halloween content being released, *Haunted Hotel* offers a different kind of story – a family drama mixed with spooky, supernatural themes. Now that the team is so pleased with how the first season turned out, they’re focused on whether they can keep the momentum going.
Appearing on the *The Bulwark Goes to Hollywood* podcast, Roller revealed they hope to create a second season of the show. He pointed out that many Netflix series last for two seasons before being cancelled, but emphasized that renewal depends on viewership numbers. He encouraged viewers to watch the show so they can produce more episodes.
Look, I get it. There’s a lot of excitement about this show, but I’ve seen the comments, and a lot of people are already bracing for the inevitable Netflix cancellation. It’s a valid concern – a lot of shows get two seasons and then disappear. Netflix Animation knows this is a reputation they have, and they’re not happy about it. Ultimately, though, it all comes down to viewership. If enough people tune in, we’ll get the chance to keep making it. So, watch it if you like it – that’s the biggest thing we need right now.
Avita Lash, a writer for the new show, shared a celebratory Instagram post marking its release. Robbie Erwin, an art director at Titmouse who worked on the show’s animation, congratulated Lash on its success. He then expressed a wish that “everyone gets to see season 2,” to which Lash responded, “you did!” This exchange suggests either that a second season is already planned, or that Erwin is hoping for its renewal.
I just finished watching *Haunted Hotel* on Netflix, and it’s a fun ride! The story centers around Katherine, who moves into a hotel her brother left behind with her two kids, Ben and Esther. Turns out, it’s haunted! But these aren’t scary ghosts – they’re actually pretty quirky and want to help Katherine turn the hotel around. The cast is great, with Will Forte, Eliza Coupe, Jimmi Simpson, and even Skyler Gisondo, who I recently saw in James Gunn’s *Superman*. If you’re looking for something light and a little spooky, definitely check out Season 1.
Could Haunted Hotel Get a Season 2 on Netflix?
As Roller pointed out, whether or not *Haunted Hotel* gets renewed for another season largely depends on its viewership. But even if the show attracts a lot of viewers, Netflix isn’t necessarily committed to making more episodes based on those numbers alone.
Recently, *My Dad the Bounty Hunter* was the last animated series to get a second season, but it ended after only two seasons in August 2023. Since 2021, only three animated series have been renewed for a third season, highlighting how uncommon it is for Netflix to continue its animated shows for very long.
The team behind *Haunted Hotel* seems eager to continue the story, particularly now that Nathan is uncovering details about his history and Katherine has survived a devastating event.
Netflix has been quick to renew its live-action series, so many are hoping they’ll give their animated shows the same consideration in the future.
