The first trailer for the upcoming series featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu gave fans their first glimpse of Rotta, Jabba the Hutt’s son. Jabba, a notorious villain from the original Star Wars films and the Clone Wars series, was known for causing problems for the galaxy’s heroes. He famously held Han Solo captive in *Star Wars: Return of the Jedi* over an unpaid debt, until Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Chewbacca rescued him. During the rescue, Leia ultimately strangled Jabba, leading to his death.
Even though Jabba the Hutt is gone, his family’s story continues in *The Mandalorian & Grogu*. His son, Rotta, will appear in the upcoming movie. Fans first got a glimpse of Rotta at Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Japan, and the recent trailer has now given everyone a clear look at the character.
Okay, so the first trailer for the new season of *The Mandalorian & Grogu* just dropped, and honestly, I’m hyped! We finally get a really good look at Rotta the Hutt – I didn’t even know we *needed* to see more of a Hutt, but here we are, and it looks awesome!
Around 52 seconds into the trailer, Rotta is shown getting the crowd excited in an arena. Din Djarin and Grogu are present, seemingly watching a gladiator-style competition.
Rotta the Hutt makes his first live-action debut in *The Mandalorian & Grogu*, with Jeremy Allen White, the star of *The Bear*, providing the character’s voice.
Rotta was last notably seen in *The Clone Wars* movie, where his great-uncle, Ziro, schemed to have him killed and made it look like the Jedi were responsible. Fortunately, Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano stopped the plot.
Okay, so we don’t know *exactly* what Rotta’s up to yet, but the fact that he’s an adult Hutt makes me think he’s taken over as the head of the Hutt Clan. I’m guessing that means trouble for Din Djarin and Grogu in the movie – definitely sounds like he’s going to be a villain!
Directed by Jon Favreau and co-written with Dave Filoni, the movie *The Mandalorian and Grogu* follows Din Djarin and Grogu as they work for the New Republic to track down and defeat remaining Imperial leaders throughout the galaxy. The film stars Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, and Jeremy Allen White, and features a musical score by Ludwig Göransson, who previously won awards for his work on the series.
Star Wars: The Mandalorian Grogu will premiere in theaters on May 22, 2026.

Why The Mandalorian & Grogu Could Give Rotta the Hutt a Different Legacy
Rotta, a potentially compelling character from *The Mandalorian and Grogu*, shouldn’t be just another typical Star Wars villain like his father, Jabba. The upcoming movie could make Rotta a more interesting character by showing his human side and giving him depth.
Rotta might begin as an enemy, causing problems for Din Djarin and Grogu. However, the show could surprise us by turning him into an unexpected helper instead.
Since Rotta appears as a skilled fighter in *The Mandalorian and Grogu*, he could be a powerful helper for Din Djarin and Grogu. He might be able to assist them as they fight against the remaining Imperial forces in the upcoming film.
Rotta might also help Din Djarin by sharing important details about the warlords, which could give them an edge in the upcoming fight.
Rotta might have once been angry with the New Republic, especially Princess Leia, due to her involvement in his father’s death. However, he may feel differently now that he knows Jedi rescued him after he was kidnapped years ago.
Rotta seems to enjoy staging illegal gladiator fights, and it’s likely he’s still involved in other criminal activities. However, he might actually be a decent Hutt deep down, potentially setting him apart from his father and changing how history remembers him.
