HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series is reportedly taking casting in a surprising direction. Sources say the studio is considering actors of all genders for the role of Lord Voldemort, potentially reimagining the iconic villain as a woman. The series, which will begin with an adaptation of The Philosopher’s Stone, will introduce the character early on through flashbacks and his key interaction with Professor Quirrell.
Men and women rumored to be auditioning for Voldemort
News started circulating about who will play Voldemort in HBO’s new Harry Potter series. Entertainment reporter Daniel Richtman shared on X (previously Twitter) that the show is considering actors of all genders for the role, raising the possibility of a female Voldemort.
His message hinted that HBO is looking at many different actors for the part. Online, people have jokingly referred to a possible female version of the character as “Lady Voldemort” or “She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.”
As a huge Harry Potter fan, I’m so excited to hear the new series will show Voldemort from the very beginning! The movies didn’t introduce Ralph Fiennes as him until ‘Goblet of Fire,’ but it sounds like this series will explore his backstory right away – we’ll even see flashbacks to the night my parents died and when he possessed Professor Quirrell in ‘Philosopher’s Stone’! It’s cool to remember that other actors – Christian Coulson, Richard Bremmer, and Ian Hart – played Voldemort in different forms before Ralph Fiennes took on the role in most of the films.
Rumors began circulating about potential actors for a role, and Cillian Murphy, known for his work in *Oppenheimer*, quickly dismissed any connection. Speaking on the *Happy Sad Confused* podcast, he joked that it’s hard to keep up with what Ralph Fiennes is doing, calling Fiennes a phenomenal actor and wishing the next actor luck. Ralph Fiennes had previously praised Murphy as a “fantastic actor” and said he’d be happy to see Murphy take on the role himself during an appearance on *Watch What Happens Live*.
While fans have suggested actors like Tom Hiddleston, HBO hasn’t announced any official casting choices yet. The series, produced by Francesca Gardiner and directed by Mark Mylod, will star Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. John Lithgow, Paapa Essiedu, and Janet McTeer will also appear in adult roles.
The Voldemort casting remains one of the most closely watched aspects of HBO’s adaptation.
