A former actor from the DC Extended Universe playfully misled fans about possibly appearing in James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe. Gunn recently unveiled his new, interconnected DC storyline with the releases of *Creature Commandos*, *Superman*, and the second season of *Peacemaker*.
Although James Gunn’s new DC Universe is being presented as a fresh start, it’s not a complete break from the past. The boundary between this new universe and the previous DC movie timeline has become increasingly unclear, as evidenced by the return of characters like John Cena’s Peacemaker, who first appeared in Gunn’s earlier DC film, *The Suicide Squad*.
As a big DC fan, I was really surprised to see Joel Kinnaman returning as Rick Flag Jr. in this new DC Universe! It’s especially interesting because he’d previously said pretty firmly that he was done with the role. It’s a fun little twist, and I’m curious to see how they’re bringing him back, considering his father in the previous continuity was played by Frank Grillo.
In an October 2024 interview with Screenrant, Joel Kinnaman firmly stated he wouldn’t appear in Season 2 of *Peacemaker*. When asked about a possible return as his Rick Flag character, he said, “That’s ridiculous. I would never. I would never be on a show like that.”
I’m honestly speechless. That’s just absurd, and there’s no way I’d ever participate in something like that. It completely goes against everything I stand for.
Many people believed Kinnaman’s statement was truthful, as his character in the DC Extended Universe had already died in both *Suicide Squad* movies, and the actor appeared to be finished with superhero films.
It seems Kinnaman probably knew all along he’d be reprising his role from *Suicide Squad* in the DC Universe and intentionally misled fans to throw them off the trail.
Interestingly, by the time this interview took place, the 45-year-old actor had probably already finished filming his scenes for Season 2 of *Peacemaker*. The series had wrapped production in November 2024, just a few weeks before he shared these comments.
New episodes of *Peacemaker* Season 2 are available every Thursday at 9 p.m. Eastern Time on HBO Max. The show continues the story of Christopher Smith (played by John Cena), an up-and-coming superhero, and connects it to the new DC Universe.
In Season 2, Episode 3, Kinnaman reprised his role as Rick Flag Jr., but this time as a version from another dimension. This is the same Rick Flag Jr. that Peacemaker, played by Cena, killed in the movie *The Suicide Squad*.
Why Did Joel Kinnaman Trick Fans About His DCU Return?
Okay, let me tell you, Joel Kinnaman popping up again as Rick Flag Jr. in *Peacemaker* Season 2 was a total shock – and a welcome one! It was one of those moments this season that really got people talking, and honestly, I didn’t see it coming at all.
The film not only resurrected a beloved character from the old DC Extended Universe, but also hinted that other characters from both *Suicide Squad* movies are still part of the DC Universe under James Gunn’s direction-Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress being the most obvious example.
Why would an actor spoil such a special moment for fans so far in advance of the show’s release?
For nearly a year, John Cena’s statements that he wouldn’t return to the DC universe led fans to believe his character wouldn’t be in *Peacemaker* Season 2. That made his unexpected appearance in Episode 3 a big surprise.
As a movie critic, I’ve seen this play out a lot with actors in superhero films. They’re masters of dodging questions about surprise appearances! It’s become a bit of a classic move – feign ignorance, then *bam* – they show up and blow everyone away, just like Andrew Garfield did with his amazing return in *Spider-Man: No Way Home*.
An actor can avoid trouble simply by saying they aren’t involved in a project, even if they are. However, if they reveal they *are* part of it before the studio is ready, they’ll face consequences.
It’s often simpler to initially deny something and correct the record later, rather than accidentally reveal information prematurely.
