When discussing classic movies from the 1980s, *The Princess Bride* always comes to mind. Released in 1987, this funny and adventurous film is still widely quoted and remains a significant part of popular culture, despite being over 35 years old. With such a successful movie, Hollywood often wonders if a remake or sequel should be made. Actress Robin Wright recently shared her thoughts on the possibility.
It seems like many beloved older movies are being revisited lately. But what about *The Princess Bride* – should it get a remake or revival? Here’s what Wright had to share about that idea.
After the show had been out for about thirty years, the original cast had a video call. Some of the actors mentioned they’d been asked about doing a follow-up, and I jokingly responded that many of us would probably need wheelchairs by then. So, a sequel is definitely not going to happen.
I was so excited to hear Robin Wright discuss a possible AARP reunion, but she also touched on why another *Princess Bride* movie is unlikely. From what I gathered, she feels the cast is simply too mature to convincingly reprise their roles. It’s hard to believe, but she’s 59, Cary Elwes is 62, Mandy Patinkin is 72, and Christopher Sarandon and Wallace Shawn are 83 and 81 respectively. It’s also incredibly sad to remember André the Giant, who we lost far too young at just 46 in 1993 due to heart failure. It just feels like time has moved on, and recapturing that magic would be impossible.

You can stream *The Princess Bride* on Disney+. Disney+ offers a plan with ads starting at $9.99 per month. For an ad-free experience, it’s $15.99 monthly, or you can save 16% by paying $159.99 for a full year. See the deal here.
Although the author, Wright, feels it’s too late to make another *Princess Bride* movie, it’s worth considering a few things. What purpose would a new film serve, especially bringing back the original cast? What new story could it tell? And, given how special the first *Princess Bride* was, it would be incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to recreate that same feeling.
At San Diego Comic-Con, director Rob Reiner told CBR he wouldn’t make a sequel to the film unless William Goldman, the original writer, was involved. Reiner revealed he even attempted to write a follow-up book, tentatively titled *Buttercup’s Baby*, but abandoned the project after three chapters, feeling the story wasn’t going in the right direction.
In a 2021 interview, Cary Elwes explained why he’s hesitant about a potential Princess Bride remake, stating he believes the original is best left untouched. He also criticized Hollywood’s tendency to rely on reboots and remakes, suggesting it’s often a cost-cutting measure to reduce marketing expenses.
Many popular films get remakes or reboots, but it seems everyone involved with *The Princess Bride* agrees it shouldn’t be turned into a series of movies. The film is so beloved and enjoyable that the original story is perfect as it is – one adventure to storm the castle is enough!
