David S. Goyer, a veteran writer of superhero films for both Marvel and DC, isn’t currently involved in any major upcoming projects. But even with all his experience, he was completely surprised by a recent cameo in *Deadpool & Wolverine*. Goyer, who wrote the original *Blade* trilogy and even directed one of the films, actively avoided trailers and promotional material, yet was still shocked to see a familiar vampire hunter appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Goyer recently told Brandon Davis on YouTube why he didn’t get his hopes up before seeing the movie with his sons, even with all the pre-release buzz. Here’s how he explained it:
Okay, so going into *Deadpool & Wolverine*, I’d heard whispers of some truly wild surprises. I’m usually pretty good at avoiding spoilers, but this time I *really* made an effort – I steered clear of all trailers and promotional stuff. I wanted to go in completely fresh, especially because I was taking my three sons with me. And let me tell you, when *it* happened… I was genuinely shocked! Seriously, there was no way I could have predicted that moment. It completely blew me away.
David S. Goyer’s excitement mirrors the positive reaction many fans had when Wesley Snipes appeared as Blade. Goyer, who wrote *Batman Begins*, also appreciated the cleverness of the moment – how the writers acknowledged the history of the character with Blade stating there’s only ever been one. This wasn’t just a nostalgic callback; it was also a knowing reference to Marvel’s difficult journey trying to relaunch *Blade* within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The acclaimed screenwriter went on to say:
I was really excited about it, and I think it happened partly because Marvel was struggling with the new Blade movie. As far as I know, Ryan came up with the idea, and they decided, ‘Why not give it a try?’ At the very least, it would remind people about the character.
The reboot of this project has faced numerous setbacks, including changes in creative teams and repeated delays since it was first announced with Mahershala Ali. One of the writers from the *Foundation* series recently expressed surprise at how difficult it’s been to get the film made, suggesting a streamlined, intense, action-packed story – and an R rating – would be the best approach. While it’s unclear when the film will finally be released – and recent reports suggest it could be delayed significantly – the success of *Deadpool & Wolverine* has reminded fans why this vampire hunter is such a popular character on the big screen.

This is a significant moment for Ryan Reynolds, considering his previous involvement with Marvel in the 2004 film *Blade: Trinity* – a movie often considered the weakest of the trilogy. That film was written and directed by David Goyer. Now, after twenty years, Reynolds is bringing his character Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and, importantly, he’s bringing back Wesley Snipes. This isn’t just a nostalgic nod to fans; it’s a way to connect the earlier Marvel films with the current MCU storylines.
Of all the superhero movies that came out in the early 2000s, *Blade* is probably the most important. It really helped launch the wave of Marvel films and the popularity of comic book movies we see today, and fans have a lot to be grateful for because of it.
With a new *Blade* movie in the works for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Wesley Snipes reprising his iconic role, the Daywalker is once again a popular figure. What the future holds for the character is uncertain, but fans can rewatch the original *Blade* trilogy – all three films are available on Paramount+. Plus, you can see Wesley Snipes return to the role in *Deadpool & Wolverine*, now streaming on Disney+.
