The recent *Superman* film from DC Studios raised a lot of questions, and fans are eagerly anticipating the next installment, *Man of Tomorrow*. Set to premiere on July 9, 2027, the upcoming movie has sparked intense speculation and countless fan theories.
James Gunn, who is writing, directing, and co-leading DC Studios, says the new Superman movie isn’t exactly a sequel to a previous film. However, it *will* feature characters from the last Superman movie (you can find details on who’s returning here). Bringing these characters back will allow Gunn to wrap up some unanswered questions from that film – questions that even general audiences might not realize were left open. Resolving these mysteries will make the new movie, *Man of Tomorrow*, a much more compelling and fulfilling story.
6 Questions We Need Answered in Man of Tomorrow
What Happened to the Engineer, & What Else Was She Able to Download From the Fortress of Solitude?

I was completely captivated by the scene in *Superman* where Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, leads a daring raid on Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. It’s incredible to see David Corenswet portray both Superman *and* his formidable opponent, Ultraman, alongside María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer. They’re all after any information they can find to use against the Last Son of Krypton, and the tension is just palpable!
The Engineer has the unique ability to transform into anything she envisions, thanks to nanites in her blood. She connects to the Fortress of Solitude’s computer and downloads a message from Superman’s Kryptonian parents, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van. In the message, they tell their son to take control of Earth, a decision that could introduce a major DC villain in a future film.
As a movie fan, it just makes sense that she could find more on that computer. I keep wondering what else the Engineer might’ve pulled off that Kryptonian tech. It’s interesting because some versions of Brainiac portray him as basically Krypton’s AI, and I’m starting to think that’s how they might bring him into the DC Universe. Could be a really cool way to connect the dots!
Although the movie *Superman* wraps up with Lex Luthor arrested and Ultraman defeated, the fate of the Engineer remains a mystery. After she’s knocked unconscious in the final fight, she disappears, leaving open the possibility that she’s still out there and could use Superman’s Kryptonian technology against him in the future.
Did Ultraman Survive the Black Hole? Will He Return as Bizarro?

Okay, let’s talk Ultraman. After that crazy scene with the black hole, everyone’s been wondering if he made it out. A really interesting fan theory suggests that black hole wasn’t just a dead end, but a portal to something like a twisted, opposite version of Earth – a place fans call Bizarro World, or even ‘Htrae’ which, cleverly, is just ‘Earth’ spelled backwards. It’s a fun idea that could really shake things up!
Considering Ultraman is essentially a less intelligent copy of Superman, much like Bizarro, this idea makes a lot of sense. The connection is strengthened by the fact that Bizarro’s world is cube-shaped, and the river of anti-protons leading to the black hole is also filled with cubes.
Did Supergirl Know About Jor-El & Lara Lor-Van’s True Intentions for Superman?

A surprising twist in the Superman story is that Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van didn’t send their son to Earth to simply save him, but with the expectation that he would eventually rule it. They also wanted him to have many children to preserve Kryptonian heritage.
Near the end of the film, we briefly see Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El (played by Milly Alcock), setting up her upcoming *Supergirl* movie, which is planned for release on June 26, 2026. Unlike Superman, who arrived on Earth as a baby, Supergirl was an adult when Krypton exploded. She appears younger than Superman because of the effects of traveling through space at high speeds.
Given this, it’s possible Supergirl understood what her aunt and uncle planned for Kal-El. Did she know they intended Superman to be a conqueror? And if so, why didn’t she share that information?
What Consequences Will Hawkgirl Face for Murdering the Leader of a Sovereign State?

Towards the climax of *Superman*, a team of heroes-Guy Gardner/Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Rex Mason/Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan)-arrive to protect the city of Jarhanpur from an invading army from the neighboring country of Boravia. During the conflict, Hawkgirl forcefully takes Boravian president Vasil Ghurkos (Zlatko Burić), flies him to a great height, and ultimately causes his death by dropping him.
Even though Ghurkos rules Boravia as a dictator, Boravia is officially an ally of the United States. When Boravia first tried to take over Jarhanpur, Superman opposed them, leading to conflict. Considering this, Hawkgirl should face repercussions for killing a foreign official – either from the U.S. government or from Superman himself, who strongly objects to murder.
These events could seriously hinder any chance of a romantic relationship between Hawkgirl and John Stewart, another Green Lantern.
Why Is Maxwell Lord Funding the Justice Gang?

The show *Superman* never explains why Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn, brother of James Gunn) is financing a team of metahumans. This question isn’t answered even in Season 2 of *Peacemaker*, where Lord is shown searching for new team members. Is Lord, the wealthy CEO of LordTech, genuinely trying to help, or does he have a hidden agenda for controlling these powerful individuals?
Information about Lord’s origins can be found in the 1987 comic *Justice League* (Volume 1), issue #1, created by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire. In that story, Lord was manipulated by an alien computer named Kilg%re, who initially made him wealthy and influential. Kilg%re then forced Lord to create the Justice League International (featuring Guy Gardner prominently) as part of a plan for global domination. However, Lord occasionally showed signs of morality and managed to break free from Kilg%re’s control.
James Gunn has publicly stated his appreciation for the *Justice League* comic book series written by Giffen, DeMatteis, and Maguire. This suggests the new DC Universe might take inspiration from that run, particularly for the Lord character. It seems especially likely, as the team in *Superman* initially appears focused on building a good public image rather than immediately helping others.
What’s the Deal With Stagg Industries, Simon Stagg, & Metamorpho?

Superman didn’t share much about Metamorpho, also known as the Element Man, beyond his powers and the fact that he has a son named Joey who looks unusual. However, the show hinted at more to come with a quick scene featuring Sapphire Stagg (Louisa Krause) watching the news alongside Metamorpho and Joey, and a very brief glimpse of the Stagg Industries logo.
Fans of comic books will recognize Stagg Industries as the company run by Sapphire’s father, Simon Stagg. Though he had a small part in the 2020 film *Wonder Woman 1984*, Stagg is the one who created Metamorpho. Before becoming a hero, Metamorpho – originally Rex Mason – was an adventurer who was secretly seeing Sapphire. When Simon Stagg found out about their relationship, he sent Rex on a dangerous mission to Egypt to find a mysterious meteor called the Orb of Ra. The energy from this orb ultimately transformed Rex into the hero known as Metamorpho.
Simon Stagg hasn’t been cast in the DC Universe yet, but it’s likely he’ll appear soon. His rivalry with Metamorpho promises to deliver some compelling drama for audiences.
