Mortal Kombat II’s release date delay has to do with James Gunn’s Superman movie.
The action movie “Mortal Kombat II”, a sequel to the 2021 version, is now set to debut in theaters in 2025. Originally planned for an October 24, 2025 release, it has been moved up by Warner Bros. Pictures and will now be shown on May 15, 2025 instead.
Why was Mortal Kombat II’s release date delayed?
It’s possible that the delay in releasing Mortal Kombat II might have been due to Superman’s impressive earnings, as implied by a recent report on Deadline.
The article states that Superman’s success for Warner Bros. was significant enough to move Mortal Kombat II back to mid-May of the following year as a potential blockbuster. The studio is already said to be profitable this year, based on Return On Investment (ROI), according to sources from Deadline. This is before the release of Paul Thomas Anderson’s political action film featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, titled One Battle After Another.
1) In total earnings worldwide, Superman has made around $614.4 million. The next installment, titled “Man of Tomorrow,” is being developed and will feature David Corenswet and Lex Luthor reprising their roles as the Man of Steel and Lex Luthor, respectively. This new film is scheduled to release on July 9, 2027.
The action film “Mortal Kombat II” is helmed by director Simon McQuoid. This movie features an ensemble cast led by Karl Urban portraying Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Jessica McNamee playing Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson depicting Kano, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Lewis Tan in the role of Cole Young, among others.
The Mortal Kombat movie from 2021 earned around $84.4 million worldwide. The only other film scheduled for May 15, 2026, is a thriller named “Is God Is” featuring Sterling K. Brown and Janelle Monáe. However, Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian with Grogu will be released a week later.
