Ricky Gervais’ New Netflix Show Isn’t At All What I Expected, But I Still Cannot Wait To Watch

As a devoted fan, it’s challenging to quantify Ricky Gervais‘ profound influence on TV comedy, yet his unexpected ascent to stardom two decades ago through co-creating “The Office” paved the way for the emotional awkwardness of “The Paper,” which debuted just recently. Few productions can boast such longevity, but there’s no doubt that his newest Netflix offering will be brimming with surprises – an unexpected twist that I didn’t foresee at all!

Ricky Gervais’ show titled “Alley Cats” is scheduled to arrive on streaming platforms after Netflix’s 2025 lineup, featuring the renowned creator voicing a house cat with strong opinions on everyday matters such as preferred food dishes and sheltering during rainstorms.

It’s no surprise that Gervais won’t be playing a real cat, and it’s confirmed that Alley Cats will fit into the category of adult animated comedies. The distinctive 2D animation style of this show is being handled by Blink Industries, which has worked on some of my all-time favorite shows, including the strange yet captivating series Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared and the eerily entertaining Netflix series Dead End: Paranormal Park. Knowing this, I’m already excited to see what they have in store for us.

Here’s a logline of what to expect, straight from the streaming service:

  • “Alley Cats is a slacker sitcom created by and starring the multi award-winning Ricky Gervais. The adult animation follows the trials and tribulations of a group of feral British cats from all walks of society, who seek companionship while ruminating on everyday life. From the funny to the absurd, the series is packed with Gervais’ signature style of heart and social commentary that audiences have come to expect.”

It’s unclear if this involves a comedian from the UK discussing topics like cats debating the existence of God and evaluating cancel culture in his stand-up routine – these themes might not be surprising given his recent 2023 Netflix special that generated humor-centric protests.

The always quotable Gervais poked fun at himself in his statement promoting the new show, saying:

I portray an overweight, slothful, arrogant, strong-willed character with fangs, yet lacking the intelligence and courage that he believes himself to possess. Quite a challenging role, indeed.

Where’s the cat drummer performing a rimshot with a pair of fish skeletons?

Take a peek at the initial presentation of the Alley Cats characters; you can all speculate who among the plump felines characterizes Gervais in this context.

Ricky Gervais, currently preparing for the upcoming release of his stand-up special titled “Mortality,” recently lent his acting skills to voice a fish character in this year’s “DogMan.” Be prepared, Flippy, as he introduces his latest persona. Prior to this, his most recent original work was the Netflix comedy series “After Life,” which concluded its run with three seasons in 2022.

Keep an eye out for the release date when you can stream “Alley Cats” on Netflix without needing any purchase.
