Some vintage comic books, particularly those featuring iconic issues, can carry significant worth for collectors. For instance, a rare initial edition of Batman’s debut has just fetched an astounding price at auction.
How much did the copy of Batman #1 sell for?
In a recent auction held by Goldin, a 1940 issue of Batman #1, where the Joker and Catwoman first appeared, was sold for an impressive $470,000. However, when you factor in buyer’s premiums, the final selling price reached a staggering half-million dollars, amounting to $573,400.
The comic you’re referring to was given a rating of 7.0, and it contained pages ranging from off-white to white, as stated in its description. In theory, if a version of this comic with a higher grade is discovered, it could potentially sell for an even greater price at auction.
Although the comic costs more than half a million dollars, its price doesn’t even make it to the top tier of the most expensive comics ever sold at auctions. Intriguingly, in the year 2022, a unique edition of Detective Comics #27 from 1939 – where Batman made his first appearance in DC Comics – was auctioned off for an astounding $1.74 million. Remarkably, this sale was facilitated by Goldin as well.
Undoubtedly, the title for the most costly comic books ever auctioned is held by Action Comics #1. This historic issue, where Superman first appeared, consistently fetches millions of dollars whenever it goes up for bid. The highest price recorded so far was $6 million in 2024, achieved through a Heritage Auctions sale.
