Mary Shelley’s renowned novel “Frankenstein,” published in 1818, is believed to have significantly inspired Guillermo del Toro’s latest horror movie. However, there’s also a chilling event from Del Toro’s personal past that left an indelible mark on his upcoming film. In a recent interview, the Academy Award-winning director disclosed that his father’s abduction in the 1990s had a substantial impact on the development of the movie starring Oscar Isaac.
Guillermo del Toro explains how his father’s kidnapping influenced Frankenstein
As I chatted with Entertainment Weekly during the bustling Toronto International Film Festival, I shared that my upcoming Frankenstein film will delve into themes of forgiveness – a topic that emerged following a deep conversation with my father about his harrowing experience being kidnapped.
The director from Mexico shared that his father was abducted in 1998, but when he returned, he remained silent about the incident. Later, before his passing, the director expressed the need to talk with him, saying, “We must discuss what happened.” This conversation held significant importance for the director as it allowed him to gain insight into the man his father truly was.
Following this discussion, Guillermo del Toro came to understand the profound importance of forgiveness, a theme he later embedded in his adaptation of Frankenstein. Yet, it’s essential to clarify that the movie does not merely depict one individual granting pardon to another. Rather, it delves into “forgiving and finding self-forgiveness,” as Del Toro himself described it.
In simpler terms, the renowned director shared insights about his gothic horror film’s exploration of forgiveness by stating, “You see, a grudge imprisons two individuals, while forgiveness sets them free. At first, I thought I could create the movie, but then I felt relieved that it didn’t happen earlier – thank goodness it happened now.
In the 1990s, it’s reported that a group of criminal suspects from Mexico kidnapped Guillermo del Toro’s father. According to UPROXX, due to financial constraints, the director of Hellboy couldn’t afford the $1 million ransom demanded for his father’s release at that time. However, he managed to secure his father’s safe return after James Cameron generously provided the necessary amount from his own funds.
