So, I simply switched it on, eager to enjoy what promised to be one of the outstanding horror movies that would continue to spark conversation for years to come.

The initial atmosphere of the film strongly suggested a horror genre, given Iris’s apparent obsession with Josh. It evoked a sense reminiscent of films like “Swimfan” or “Fear,” albeit perhaps not as intense as Mark Wahlberg’s aggressive scenes. However, when a character casually threatens to kill her boyfriend in the opening minutes, it became clear that the story was headed towards a more ominous direction.

Why I Loved Companion After Realizing What It’s Really About

After Iris took Sergey’s life, a lot of her actions in the Companion began to resonate with me. In that moment of distress, Josh had no other choice but to deactivate her. The peculiarities about Iris that I found confusing from the start suddenly became clear. She was a piece of programming, and all her apparent affection for her boyfriend, who treated her more like an object than a companion, was just part of her code.

At TopMob, one of my coworkers believes that knowing the twist in advance enhances the movie experience, but I have a contrasting opinion. For me, the film delivered a powerful shock when I discovered, along with Iris, that she was a program. This revelation left me bewildered and torn about the entire plot from then on. With the added context, lines like Kat implying she might be replaced by Iris take on a whole new meaning.

To put it simply, what drew me to “Companion” was its striking resemblance to another favorite of mine, “Black Mirror.” Both stories explore the unsettling possibilities of future technology and the ethical dilemmas they could bring. This theme resonates deeply with my appreciation for science fiction. As a result, “Companion” quickly became an instant classic in my book. Moreover, I’m convinced that we don’t require artificial companions to entertain our darker instincts – such relationships can empower the twisted-minded. Kudos to Jack Quaid for eloquently portraying this idea, as Josh is indeed a character I could do without.
