Netflix has announced that the second season of the Rurouni Kenshin anime will be released within a specific timeframe in the year 2023. This latest adaptation is a scene-for-scene recreation of the 1996 anime, both derived from the manga written by Nobuhiro Watsuki. Interestingly, Watsuki resumed writing new chapters for the manga in 2018, despite facing significant controversy earlier on.
Rurouni Kenshin Season 2 to set Netflix release date for next month
As per What’s on Netflix, the second season of the Rurouni Kenshin anime is expected to premiere on Netflix in October 2025. This anime series will be available for streaming not only in the United States and the UK, but also in Canada, Latin America, South Africa, and numerous other regions worldwide.
The anime, originating from a manga written by Nobuhiro Watsuki, is still set to premiere on the streaming platform, despite the legal issues involving Watsuki. According to Comicbook.com’s report, Watsuki was charged with possessing child pornography, resulting in him being ordered to pay a fine of approximately $6,500 and serve one year in prison by authorities.
The public’s perception towards both the manga and the anime was influenced by the accusations against Watsuki, and voice actor Howard Wang spoke out about the issue by stating that he does not condone those actions in any form. He also declared that he would contribute a portion of his earnings to charity.
Nobuhiro Watsuki was penalized with a 200,000 yen fine, equivalent to $1,318, but avoided jail time. Despite coming back to work on new chapters in 2018, he took another break in 2024, causing the anime series to pause as well. In this period, Shueisha issued a statement expressing gratitude to their readers for following Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc and explained that Watsuki’s health issues necessitated a temporary halt of the serialization. They believed that taking time off would allow for the smooth and continuous continuation of the story in the future.
