In April, there were whispers circulating about Colin Jost possibly leaving Saturday Night Live, and speculation around possible changes to “Weekend Update” has been growing in anticipation of the show’s return to its 2025 TV schedule. With the numerous cast updates for Season 51, it’s not a shock that people are discussing how SNL might seem if one or two new hosts were delivering the segment focused on current events.
Luckily, Scarlett Johansson, Jost’s highly influential partner and one of Hollywood’s top-earning actors, provided a more informed perspective than most Saturday Night Live fans when discussing her directorial debut Eleanor the Great at the Toronto International Film Festival. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Johansson hinted that Jost will likely return to the “Weekend Update” desk for another season, stating: “He’s definitely coming back.
He’s going back to work.
While Colin Jost’s future in sketch comedy hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, this recent comment might be as close as we can get to knowing until either Jost himself speaks up or Saturday Night Live reveals their Season 51 cast list.
Additionally, Johansson discussing Jost’s role doesn’t automatically mean Michael Che will rejoin him at the “Weekend Update” desk again. However, given their strong chemistry, it seems unlikely they would continue without each other. This development leaves me hopeful that Che might decide to come back.

While discussing Colin Jost’s return to SNL doesn’t necessarily imply that she will also participate, her status as a member of the prestigious 5-Timers Club suggests she might not host one of the initial episodes of Season 51. However, it could be exciting if she and stand-up comedian Dane Cook shared hosting duties for a future episode in the new season, given that they’ve both been guest hosts before.
When asked if she could return, Johansson responded by saying:
30 Rock’s general approach seems to revolve around the idea that things are always on the brink, similar to what occurs just before a Friday night leading into a Saturday show.
We could potentially find out which actors will appear in upcoming episodes only on the Friday prior to the premiere. So far, the lineup consists of Devon Walker, Heidi Gardner, Michael Longfellow, and Emil Wakim, with the exception of the disbanded sketch troupe Please Don’t Destroy. Ben Marshall, one of five new cast members announced from this group, is set to join, but we’re unsure if any more major announcements are coming up.
Keep an eye out for Scarlett Johansson’s forthcoming remarks as they may provide additional insights about the upcoming “Saturday Night Live” season, premiering on NBC on October 4 at 11:30 p.m. ET. In the meantime, her new film “Eleanor the Great,” featuring June Squibb, is set to be released in cinemas on September 26.
