Who Dies In Conjuring: Last Rites (And Everyone Who Survives)

In “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” there was a pivotal death scene that shifted the direction of the storyline. Unlike previous films in the main Warner Bros. Conjuring series, where the protagonists didn’t perish on-screen, the marketing for this movie hinted at a change, as it was revealed that the case examined in the film would have a lasting effect on the careers of Ed (played by Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine (portrayed by Vera Farmiga) Warren.

The concluding chapter of the Warrens’ tale could be their toughest yet, focusing on the Smurl Family Haunting that occurred in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, during 1986. Despite being based on actual events, Last Rites deviates from the original narrative in certain aspects, including the untimely demise of a character who was close to the Warrens.

Who Died in The Conjuring: Last Rites?

Title change to: The Conjuring: Final Blessing – Elevating the intensity with daring maneuvers, this sequel dramatically ends the life of a significant character: Father Gordon. He was not only a cherished friend but also a trusted confidant for the Warrens within the Catholic Church, regularly collaborating with them on their supernatural investigations over the years.

In the commencement of “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” the Warrens were partially retired, allowing Father Gordon to take up the investigation into the eerie events that had been making news nationwide – the Smurl Family’s haunting case in Pennsylvania.

In a clandestine move, Father Gordon visited the Smurl household to investigate strange occurrences troubling them, as he endeavored to offer assistance without seeking approval from the Catholic Church. This meant that only the Smurls themselves were privy to his presence at their home.

Instead of using holy water to bless the house, Father Gordon found that it wasn’t effective. As a result, he chose to seek formal assistance from the Catholic Church by reaching out to the Diocese of Scranton in Pennsylvania.

Although the enigmatic spirit from the haunted mirror deceived Father Gordon by sneaking into the church and altering reality, creating an illusionary world around him. This demonic force seemed to have control over Father Gordon, even within a holy place like the church, demonstrating an unprecedented power compared to any they had previously faced, according to the Warrens.

In a sorrowful turn of events, it was Father Gordon who, in a distressing state, ended his own life. His death, though anticipated by few, was particularly tragic due to his plea for assistance from the Warrens being unanswered.

Did the Dog Die In Conjuring: Last Rites?

In a crucial scene from “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” it was the Smurl family’s beloved Golden Retriever that found itself in peril. When the demon managed to take hold of Judy Warren, its terrifying presence sent shivers down everyone’s spine. It went so far as to imprison Lorraine in the basement and keep her fiancé, Tony Spera, barred from the house.

As Judy, who appeared possessed, lifted the protective dog and hurled him against a wall, it seemed that the animal might have been harmed. Yet, post Ed’s instructions for the Smurls to leave for safety, the dog was found unscathed, strolling outside with the family. Later on, after the Warrens successfully resolved the haunting, the dog was observed once more with his family, wagging his tail happily as peace returned.

What Happened to the Other Characters in Conjuring: Last Rites?

Lorraine Warren

Last Rites,” Lorraine Warren played a crucial role in discovering the solution essential for ending the torment caused by the demon that affected both her own family and the Smurls.

Instead of persuading Judy throughout her life to suppress her supernatural talents, Lorraine later gave her daughter permission to accept and use her extraordinary powers. Together, they confronted the demon trapped in the mirror, successfully banishing it back to its own realm of darkness.

Judy Warren

In the tale of “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” Judy Warren plays a pivotal role as she becomes the primary focus of the malevolent spirit residing within the mirror. After witnessing a vision during Father Gordon’s funeral, Judy was instrumental in convincing her parents to visit the Smurls’ house in Pennsylvania.

During the events of “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” Judy nearly succumbed to a demonic possession, but thankfully, her life was saved when her parents and Tony teamed up to intervene and prevent her from dying. This close call with death ultimately led Ed and Lorraine Warren to decide it was time to step away from their work on paranormal cases due to the extreme danger involved.

Tony Spera

In the realm of “The Conjuring” universe, Tony Spera, portrayed by Ben Hardy, makes his debut as a fresh character. He is a retired police officer and fiancé to Judy Warren, who joined forces with the Warrens during their investigation into the Smurl family’s haunting episode.

Initially doubtful about supernatural phenomena, Tony found himself unwillingly immersed in the terrifying reality of paranormal investigations when Judy Warren was apparently possessed by a demon. During this chaotic incident involving a mirror, Tony suffered a leg injury but managed to survive. The movie concluded with a poignant wedding scene between Tony and Judy, marking their emotional union amidst the traumatic events.

The Smurl Family

In simpler terms, the Smurl household, situated in West Pittston, is home to eight family members. This includes Jack and Janet Smurl, their parents Mary and John, as well as their four daughters – Dawn, Heather, and identical twins Carin and Shannon.

Although everyone managed to survive, certain family members endured severe injuries. For instance, Dawn experienced internal bleeding that caused her to vomit blood after discarding the demonic mirror. Similarly, Mary suffered a heart attack. To add to their troubles, Jack was attacked by one of the ghosts before retiring for the night.

Despite enduring traumatic experiences caused by the haunting, every member of the family was found to be thriving and in good health as the movie concluded.

But Does Ed Die?

2021’s movie “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” depicted a demon endangering Ed Warren’s life during an exorcism, by targeting his heart condition. During this sequence, the possessed David was being exorcised. Some viewers speculated that this near-death experience for Ed could be a hint of his future demise in “The Conjuring: Last Rites”.

Indeed, a scene from the movie “Last Rites” featured a doctor advising Ed to avoid having a heart attack, as his survival could be uncertain in such a situation.

In the dramatic finale, as Judy was under the influence of a demon, the demon aimed to trigger a heart attack in Ed, intending to hinder him from intervening in Judy’s suicide attempt. Although Ed came close to dying, Janet Smurl rushed to provide him with his medication, ultimately preventing his demise.
