Spoilers ahead for the new I Know What You Did Last Summer.
For years, the horror genre has flourished, bringing immense joy to horror enthusiasts such as myself. Many of the top-notch horror films have been revived with exciting sequels, one being “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. Before its premiere, it ranked high on my list of most eagerly awaited summer horror movies due to my deep appreciation for the initial two installments. However, despite enjoying the overall production, the ending was a bit disappointing.
In simpler terms, the review for TopMob’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” highly commended director/writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s work on the updated slasher movie. I personally found it exceptionally enjoyable due to its unexpectedly humorous script, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s appearance, and the suspense surrounding the Fisherman’s identity. However, I was a bit disappointed with the anticlimactic ending, which felt underwhelming compared to the rest of the movie.
The Final Confrontation With Ray Wasn’t A Full On Battle With Julie And Ava
In this latest installment of “Scream,” streaming exclusively on Paramount+, it took me by surprise when Ray was unmasked as The Fisherman – and even more shocking was his ruthless act of killing Stevie. It’s intriguing that we haven’t encountered any character transitions from hero to villain in the new “Scream” films, so this twist provided an exciting deviation from the norm. I couldn’t wait for the climactic showdown between Ray and Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Julie James!
In the trailers for the movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer”, Julie was heard uttering her signature phrase, “What’s keeping you?” This question was directed towards her former lover in preparation for his attempt on her life. However, before a fierce confrontation similar to Laurie Strode and Michael Myers unfolded, Freddie Prinze Jr.’s character was instead killed by a harpoon gun, delivered by the film’s latest heroine Ava (played by Chase Sui Wonders).
The climax was the only disappointing aspect of the new version of “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” as it featured a significant error by not showcasing Julie James effectively battling The Fisherman, despite Jennifer Love Hewitt’s reputation as an exceptional scream queen. Despite my pleasure at seeing her return to one of her iconic roles on the big screen, I felt that her character could have been more involved in the violence and suspense of the narrative.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I must admit that I was taken aback when Julie passionately urged the new cast to track down and eliminate whoever was causing chaos among them. Intriguingly, the climactic scene of this latest sequel showcases Brandy’s much-anticipated comeback as Karla, with her posing an intriguing question to her old college roommate: “What have we gone and messed up this time?” It seems that these two characters are ready to confront the enigmatic antagonist who has been haunting them. However, it leaves one wondering why such fierce determination wasn’t exhibited throughout the entire film.
The latest adaptation of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is now up for sale or rental as part of the 2025 film catalog. I thoroughly enjoyed around 95% of it, so I’m optimistic about a potential sequel. Ideally, both surviving characters from the original series would be included in future installments.
