Warning: SPOILERS for The Fantastic Four: First Steps are ahead!
Initially portrayed as a formidable adversary for the Fantastic Four during their early years, Paul Walter Houser’s captivating character Harvey Elder (also known as Mole Man) eventually became an indispensable ally to Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm, and Johnny Storm in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”. Due to his rule over Subterranea, New York City’s citizens were securely relocated beneath the underground kingdom during the final showdown with Galactus. However, a crucial conversation between Harvey and Sue that didn’t make it into “First Steps” was later revealed through storyboards from the 2025 movie.
Storyboard artist Simeon Wilkins shared these storyboards that he drew on Instagram, which show Sue embarking into Subterranea on her own, and in civilian clothing, to meet with Mole Man, who’s being protected by the Moloids.

People who watched The Fantastic Four: First Steps might recall that Sue Storm, also known as the Invisible Woman, was the human from the surface world whom Harvey Elder trusted. It’s through her efforts that a peace agreement was established between Subterranea and the surface world, and she sought his aid to ensure minimal harm when Galactus arrived in New York City. This was so, despite Reed Richards, aka Mister Fantastic, disparagingly calling Elder the Mole Man.

As a die-hard comic book fan, I’m utterly thrilled about the latest sneak peeks from the New Fantastic Four! The concept art unveils an intriguing deleted scene featuring Pedro Pascal that has left me yearning for more. However, what truly captivates my imagination is the potential scale of Galactus – if they managed to portray him as colossally massive as suggested in these sketches, it would be nothing short of breathtaking!
It turns out that the final battle for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” was originally intended to take place in space. I’m curious to know why a rather unexpected scene change occurred.
Through Simeon Wilkins’ social media posts, we now have insight into how Sue Storm initiated that agreement. Venturing into Subterranea would likely be terrifying for most people, given the unsettling gaze of the Moloids as they guide you towards their leader. However, Sue is no ordinary individual; her powers of invisibility and force field generation ensure she’d handle herself well if things turned unfavorable beneath ground level.
It’s fantastic that Mole Man, who first appeared in comics alongside the Fantastic Four all those years ago, finally found his way onto the big screen more than 60 years later. Interestingly, Tim Blake Nelson’s character in the 2015 Fantastic Four was initially meant to be Harvey Elder, but his name was altered to Harvey Allen during post-production. With a follow-up to First Steps supposedly being worked on, let’s cross our fingers for more opportunities to see Paul Walter Hauser’s character engaging with the team.
During this time, the Fantastic Four are scheduled to make their comeback in December 2026 for “Avengers: Doomsday,” which will be followed by “Avengers: Secret Wars” in 2027. Although “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is currently showing in cinemas, you can expect it to be streamable with a Disney+ subscription before the end of this year.
