5 MCU Post-Credit Scenes That Directly Set Up Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel Studios has started subtly revealing details about “Avengers: Doomsday” across five of its post-movie scenes, suggesting possibilities such as Incursions and even references to the X-Men. The cryptic post-credit sequences in the Multiverse Saga don’t seem to carry the same weight as those in the Infinity Saga, which were instrumental in setting up future collaborations, hinting at upcoming films, or progressing towards Thanos’ grand scheme involving the Infinity Stones.

Lately, dedicated fans who stick around until the end of the movies have found themselves grappling with unresolved plotlines, fleeting appearances by Marvel Comics legends that might not recur, and the occasional awkward joke. This situation could be because of a lack of foresight for the Multiverse Saga and ambiguity at Marvel Studios, particularly after Jonathan Majors was let go as Kang, which led to the announcement of his replacement, Robert Downey Jr., as Doctor Doom, only after more than a year had passed.

Despite some Multiverse Saga post-credit scenes being perceived as unremarkable by Marvel Studios, five MCU movie end-credits sequences have hinted at the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday,” scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

In the post-credits scene of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange sequel, a character played by Charlize Theron, who is known as Clea from Marvel Comics (and is Dormammu’s daughter), appeared. She confronted Doctor Strange in New York and stated, “It was you who triggered an Incursion, and we need to rectify it.

In Doctor Strange 2, we’re introduced to the concept of Incursions within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). These are events that happen when two Earths collide, potentially leading to the destruction of one or both realms. Given his ability to traverse dreams and his encounter with the Illuminati, it’s plausible that the Incursion involved Earth-838.

Certainly, halting the Incursions is a key focus for Doom’s plans in Avengers 5, potentially making Doctor Strange a target. However, it appears that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Marvel character, Doctor Strange, has already embarked on his own journey to correct this situation, which may lead both him and Clea to reappear in Doomsday.

The Marvels

Following a fall through a multidimensional portal, Monica Rambeau ended up on an alternate Earth populated by the traditional X-Men, among them the Beast portrayed by Kelsey Grammar (seen in The Marvels‘ post-credits scene). This group of mutants were teaming up with a variant of her mother, Maria Rambeau, who goes by the superhero name Binary.

In the sequel, “Avengers: Doomsday,” the Earth inhabited by mutants will be revisited. This could lead to a thrilling showdown between the Avengers and the Fantastic Four against the X-Men. Much like how Doctor Strange’s encounter with Earth-838 seemed to initiate an Incursion, Monica’s arrival on this unnamed Earth might have accidentally triggered a collision that could create another universe.

In simpler terms, the character known as Grammar’s Beast is one of six X-Men heroes expected to feature in “Avengers 5”. However, it’s widely believed that they might not make it to the end of the film. As for Monica and Jessica Rambeau, while they haven’t officially been confirmed for “Doomsday”, there are whispers suggesting they could be among the actors secretly announced in March’s cast reveal.

Captain America: Brave New World

Instead of other Marvel Cinematic Universe post-credits scenes that hinted at characters and plots for “Avengers: Doomsday,” “Captain America: Brave New World” subtly foreshadowed the looming dangers facing Anthony Mackie’s character, Sam Wilson, with a more ominous tone.

In the context of Brave New World, the villain subtly questioned, “Don’t you believe there are other worlds out there?” He also foreshadowed his intention to safeguard this specific realm against potential threats from elsewhere.

Aren’t we both inhabitants of the same universe? The one that you’d willingly give your life for. It seems inevitable, I’ve foreseen it in the odds, as clear as broad daylight. All these brave souls safeguarding our world. Could you believe there might be others just like you out there? Could you imagine this is the only universe we live in? Let’s find out how you’ll defend your territory when confronted with adversaries from elsewhere.

The Leader’s caution to Sam Wilson might be compared to Tony Stark’s recurring dreams about the impending Thanos attack in the Infinity Saga. Right now, Earth’s strongest superheroes are oblivious to the perils brewing from the Multiverse, which they will soon encounter. However, this warning could have spurred Wilson into readying himself for the challenges ahead.

Thunderbolts*

Following Sentry’s tumultuous assault on New York which gave birth to the New Avengers, the Thunderbolts leaped forward 14 months later in the post-credit sequence – an event that many anticipated to be a preview of the initial scenes from Avengers: Doomsday.

In Phase 5, the stinger subtly establishes several plots for the future Avengers film, one of which involves a clash between Sam Wilson’s team of Avengers and Yelena Belova’s new lineup, potentially hinting at an exciting confrontation when they meet in 2026.

Furthermore, Yelena disclosed that the New Avengers had been kept out of the loop due to a prolonged “space emergency” which appeared to be reaching its climax with the Fantastic Four’s imminent arrival on Earth-616, prior to their involvement in the upcoming event known as Doomsday.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

The movie titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” serves as a significant and intriguing hint for the upcoming “Avengers 5”. In this film, it is suggested that Robert Downey Jr.’s character appears on Earth-828, where he is none other than Doctor Doom. Although fans have not seen Downey Jr.’s villainous countenance yet, the post-credit scene set in 2025 subtly hints at his fascination with the incredibly potent Franklin Richards.

In the course of attempting to halt the Incursions, it’s anticipated that Doctor Doom may employ the four-year-old Franklin as his primary weapon in the ensuing battle.

In the closing scene, it seems ambiguous why Franklin had Doom’s bare face in his hands, yet some theories propose that he could be altering Victor von Doom’s original visage to mimic Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, aiming to deceive the Earth-616 heroes under false pretenses.

BONUS.) Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

It’s improbable that the mysterious transmission from the Ten Rings seen in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be further investigated in Avengers: Doomsday. Nevertheless, the post-credit scene could hold significance as a potential introductory encounter between the future Avengers team led by Sam Wilson, which is expected to make an appearance in the 2026 blockbuster movie.

It has been said that Shang-Chi, Wong, Captain Marvel, and Bruce Banner are all expected to join the upcoming Avengers team lineup, as they were present during the meeting.

Sam Wilson (Captain America) and Joaquin Torres (Falcon) might not be present, as well as She-Hulk, who is rumored to join the team later on.
