James Gunn recently discussed the reason for changing the Justice League to the Justice Gang in Peacemaker Season 2, to make it consistent with the wider DC Universe (DCU) and the extended DC Universe (DCEU). In a recent interview, he explained how this change connects to the DCU timeline and why it allows Peacemaker and Blue Beetle to easily fit into the new continuity.

James Gunn explained to Rotten Tomatoes that Peacemaker had an unusual status. While he was often associated with the DCEU, he wasn’t truly a part of it. Instead, he inhabited what could be described as a sort of “transitional universe” within DC comics. At this time, there was no one ensuring consistency across different stories, and everything was about to be revised with The Flash.

To clear up the confusion, Gunn explained in a post on Threads that the “previously” section occurs before Superman. He further elaborated that the recap encompasses events preceding the film, whereas the season unfolds immediately after Superman.

According to Gunn, he aimed to significantly alter the ending of Season 1 by swapping out the Justice League for the Justice Gang, but ultimately opted for a change in the recap instead. He clarified that at the time, DC lacked a clear management structure. Snyder stepped down, Whedon completed only the Justice League, and Dwayne Johnson’s bid to take charge disintegrated following Black Adam.
