James Gunn Unveils Krypto’s 4 Secret Superpowers (Photos)

James Gunn’s DC Studios revealed a fresh take on Krypto, Superman’s dog, showcasing some superpowers that weren’t featured in the movie. Notably, Krypto is now available as a collectible popcorn bucket, making him one of the most beloved early characters in Gunn’s new DC Universe. Although Superman and his dog have had exciting scenes together on screen, Krypto’s full capabilities haven’t been fully explored in live-action yet.

In a fresh lineup of TV shows from DC Studios, spearheaded by co-CEO James Gunn, we now have the first episode of “Krypto Saves the Day!“, focusing on Krypto the Superdog who originally hails from the world of Superman. Being one among several new shows in this lineup, “Krypto Saves the Day!” puts the spotlight on Krypto’s independent adventures, allowing him to tackle various situations in Metropolis that don’t require full-blown superhero intervention. This offers an opportunity for Krypto to showcase his four unique powers that were not previously demonstrated in his live-action DC Universe debut.

In the live-action film “Superman,” Krypto demonstrates several remarkable abilities that are reminiscent of those Clark Kent exhibits throughout the movie. His frequently utilized powers consist of flight, immense strength, and high speed. Additionally, he has incredible endurance, as demonstrated when he pursues squirrels in Lex Luthor’s pocket universe prison, and enhanced senses, primarily in smell and hearing.

4 Krypto the Superdog Powers Not Seen in Superman Movie

Although Gunn has verified that the animated stories of Krypto! aren’t part of the official DC Universe (DCU), it can be inferred that several aspects of these short cartoons, particularly the powers attributed to Krypto as detailed below, align with the DCU’s reality. The events depicted in the shorts, however, are not considered canon.

Heat/Laser Vision

At the beginning of “Krypto Saves the Day!”, the main dog character showcases a superpower that was not previously displayed in “Superman”. Unlike David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman who uses this power against multiple adversaries in his standalone movie, Krypto does not demonstrate the same use.

In the cartoon, the powerful canine scratches its ear, causing a flea to leap from it onto the floor below. Upon noticing the bug, its eyes begin to glow fiery red, and using his intense vision, he shoots a laser beam from his eyes, instantly vaporizing the flea.

In the animated short, the superpowered dog scratches behind its ear, dislodging a flea onto the ground below. Upon spotting the insect, it focuses intensely, emitting a blazing red beam of heat vision that instantly annihilates the flea.

Ice Breath

In simpler terms, one frequently overlooked ability from Kryptonian folklore is called Ice Breath. It made a significant comeback in the Superman movie series for the first time since 2006’s Superman Returns. This remarkable power enables our hero Superman to chill or freeze objects around him, halting his adversaries temporarily.

In a brief moment, Krypto pursues a pesky pigeon through Metropolis, eventually finding himself on the receiving end of an unwelcome surprise: the bird defecating on his nose while perched high up in a tree’s branches. Enraged by this incident, Krypto employs his icy breath to encapsulate the tree in ice before charging into it, causing the frozen structure to shatter. As a result, the pigeon is momentarily entombed within a block of ice.

X-Ray Vision

In different portrayals of Superman, X-ray vision – a power that allows him to see through most obstacles – is not often used. However, in James Gunn’s Superman movie, neither Clark Kent nor his dog utilized this ability since they didn’t find it necessary to peer through any barriers.

In the Krypto cartoon, Krypto demonstrates his power early on during a moment at home. Annoyed by a pesky pigeon, he leaves through the window and disappears from sight. However, with his X-ray vision, Krypto peeks through the wall to check on the bird. Remarkably, the pigeon continues to tease him even while Krypto is using this special ability.

Suction Breath

In DC Comics, Kryptonians possess an additional superpower beyond their icy breath – it’s called suction breath. On Earth, Superman and his kin can draw in nearly unlimited amounts of air, which grants them the extraordinary ability to pull objects situated in front of them towards them powerfully, using just one deep inhalation.

In the animated short, Krypto employs his hidden abilities (previously not utilized in the latest DCU film alongside Superman) towards the end. During this scenario, he exerts his power to attract a pigeon towards him, resulting in chaotic consequences elsewhere, as a school bus filled with children unexpectedly plunges from a nearby bridge due to the commotion.

On July 11, 2025, the movie titled “Superman” marked the debut of DC Universe’s first theatrical release under the joint leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-CEOs from DC Studios. Featuring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult in key roles, the plot follows Clark Kent during his initial days as a journalist at the Daily Planet, culminating in his first significant encounter with Lex Luthor that threatens Metropolis. Currently, you can catch this movie in theaters or purchase/rent it digitally.
