David Jonsson takes on the Black Panther mantle in new Black Panther 3 art.
Marvel Studios surprised fans at San Diego Comic-Con by announcing that Jonsson will play T’Challa, the adult son of Nakia and the late Black Panther, in future Marvel Cinematic Universe films. T’Challa was first introduced as a child in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The news quickly became a hot topic online, with Marvel fans excitedly sharing their ideas about what the new hero’s costume might look like.

A notable addition is a cape – a popular element of Black Panther’s comic design that hasn’t appeared in the MCU films yet. Details about Black Panther 3 are still limited. We know that Ryan Coogler is returning as director after his recent film Sinners, and Letitia Wright (Shuri) and Winston Duke (M’Baku) will reprise their roles. The biggest news so far is the casting of Michael B. Jordan as the new T’Challa. Since Jordan is 32, the film will likely need to address how to age up the character, potentially through time travel or the use of the multiverse.
The choice of Jonsson is promising for the future of Black Panther. While Chadwick Boseman portrayed T’Challa leading Wakanda in the Avengers films, the 2018 Black Panther movie focused on his struggle to regain the throne from Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger. Sadly, due to Boseman’s death, T’Challa passed away between films in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, leaving fans without seeing a full arc of him ruling Wakanda.
Now, Jonsson’s T’Challa has the chance to learn from Wakanda’s best: Shuri will train him in the ways of the Black Panther, and M’Baku will prepare him for his future role as king. Giving this new T’Challa a classic Black Panther look, complete with a cape faithful to the comics, would really emphasize his growth within the MCU.
After the X-Men join the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the 2027 film Avengers: Secret Wars, there’s potential for T’Challa, played by Jonsson, to have a romantic connection with Storm, mirroring their comic book relationship. Storm might even make a brief appearance in the 2028 Black Panther 3 movie. While Jonsson’s Black Panther suit hasn’t been revealed yet, fan art suggests that including the character’s iconic cape in Black Panther 3 would be a thrilling addition.
