One of the most beloved Nintendo franchises is finally getting the big-screen treatment.
I’m noticing a real push in Hollywood to bring video games to the big screen, and Nintendo properties are leading the charge – the Super Mario movies have been huge hits, obviously. But get this: 2027 is going to bring one of their most famous franchises to life with a live-action film, and I’m incredibly curious to see how it turns out.
With Sony’s movie adaptation of The Legend of Zelda set to release within the next year, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth—who plays Link—has shared some insights into his experience bringing the iconic character to life. Speaking with ScreenRant while promoting season 3 of House of the Dragon, Ainsworth discussed taking on the role and adapting the Nintendo game for a wider audience. Now that filming is complete, he was asked if he could offer any hints about Link’s personality or what fans can expect to see in the live-action version.
You know, when I talked to Ainsworth, he was pretty tight-lipped about the new movie! He didn’t want to give away too much, but he did say being on a set that huge was incredible. He’s gotten to experience that twice now – working on these massive projects in totally different universes, which is amazing for any actor. And get this… both times he had to wear green screen gear! A funny little coincidence, right?
Ainsworth acknowledged some similarities between his work on House of the Dragon and a potential Legend of Zelda movie, but emphasized his admiration for the incredible detail and skill displayed by everyone involved in both projects. He’s excited for audiences to finally experience them.
I’m so excited for the live-action Zelda movie! It’s directed by Wes Ball and Bo Bragason is playing Princess Zelda, which is fantastic casting. They started filming way back in November 2025 and wrapped up in April 2026, but honestly, they’ve been keeping everything under wraps, so we don’t know much about it yet. It’s set to come out in 2027 and I can’t wait!
Although Sony hasn’t released a trailer yet, it was announced earlier this year that some of the movie was filmed in Otago, New Zealand – the same location used for The Lord of the Rings films. This area was probably chosen to represent the world of Hyrule in the movie.
Currently, we don’t know which other iconic characters from The Legend of Zelda will appear. While many fans believe Ganondorf will make an appearance, Sony hasn’t confirmed or denied this, and no actor has been cast in the role yet.
As a big fan of The Legend of Zelda, I got really excited when set photos started circulating online! One character everyone was trying to identify was Impa. People noticed Bragason hanging out with an actress who looked a lot like the Sheikah bodyguard from the games, and all signs pointed to Dichen Lachman being cast in the role – though it wasn’t officially confirmed at the time. It definitely got fans talking!
New episodes of House of the Dragon season 3 premiere on Sundays at 9 PM on HBO.
The Legend of Zelda is officially scheduled to open in theaters on April 30, 2027.
